Darien Road Race on Sunday, Sept 16: Traffic Advisory Issued, Don’t Wait to Register

The 39th annual Darien Road Race, with about 500 racers, will be held on Sunday, Sept. 16, 2018, starting at 9 a.m.

Drivers and area residents are advised to expect short-term delays and detours along the route.

Darien Police personnel will be positioned along the route to facilitate the flow of traffic and the safety of the runners.

The race will start at Pear Tree Point Beach. Impacted roads will be Pear Tree Point Road, Long Neck Point Road, Goodwives River Road, Sunswyck Road, Tory Hole Road, Delafield Island Road, Red Coat Pass, Old Kings Highway S., Locust Hill Road and Andrews Drive.

If You’re Going …

The Darien Road Race includes a 1.5-mile Fun Run and, new this year, a 5-mile race.

This year’s race will feature “The Finish Line” tent with music, games, sponsor booths, silent auction and an awards ceremony. Organized by the Community Fund of Darien, the race has raised a significant amount of money over the years to benefit our neighbors with critical needs in Stamford, Norwalk and Darien.

PRE-RACE DAY PACKET PICKUP 9 a.m. to 12 noon on Saturday, Sept. 15 inside Bankwell, 1065 Post Road, Darien (formerly Panera Bread)

If you pick up your packet on Saturday, you are all set for race day. No need to stand in line.

Also, remember to arrive early, parking is always tight on race day.

Once the beach parking lot fills up, runners will be directed to park at Crane Road, Pear Tree Point School and Harbor Road. Parking will be restricted in these areas so please pay attention to the signage or you will be towed. Plan accordingly! Please carpool or consider taking an Uber to the race. We will also have some amazing silent auction items so be sure to visit inside the tent and please come prepared to bid!

This year, race day registrants will be required to self-register online and must bring their cell phones and credit/debit cards for payment. Self-registration will be the only option on race day, and the fee increases to $55. Please help us spread the word!

Note: Runners will run with traffic due to several blind curves throughout Delafield Island. On the return section of the race, once runners reach Goodwives River Road, they will be directed to run against traffic until they reach the finish line. Roads will not be completely closed to traffic during the race so runners will be sharing the road with vehicles.
