You can register now for Darien Art Center’s upcoming adult and children’s educational classes in dance, visual arts, music, theater and martial arts, as well as special events.

FOR AGES 3 THROUGH HIGH SCHOOL

Theater

NEW! A Wrinkle in Time, grades 6 to 8, Auditions: Saturday, Feb. 9 from 10 a.m. to 12 noon, Rehearsals: Saturday, March 2 to April 27 from 10 a.m. to 12 noon, Performances: May 3 to 5. An ensemble-driven one act production. To sign up for an audition slot, email maria@darienarts.org by Feb. 4. $360

NEW! Kids in the Cast, grades 3 to 5, Thursdays, 3:45 to 4:45 p.m., April 4 to May 19. This fun and silly hour has students play the games of improv, study acting and develop their unique performance skills. $225.

NEW! Shakespeare or What You Will, grades 9 to 12, 5 to 6:30 p.m., April 4 to May 18. Young actors work along Shakespeare on the Sound Artistic Director, Claire Kelly and Education Director Nick Urda to uncover the secrets of performing and loving Shakespeare. $250.

Dance and Martial Arts

Dance classes for all levels, ages 3 & up include Ballet, Jazz, Hip Hop, Teen Lyrical, Teen Contemporary, Modern, Broadway Dance, Tap, and Pointe. Martial Arts for all ages 3 1/2 & up, the art of Karate and Kung Fu, focusing on self-discipline, self-control, self-defense and fun.

Music

Private Instruction in Piano, Guitar, Violin, Cello, Flute, Percussion, Voice – 30 minutes for $50, 45 min for $75 or 1 hour lessons for $99, Jan. 2 to June 14.

NEW! Young Composers, Grades 3 to 12, Saturdays, 12 noon to 1:30 p.m., Jan. 12 to March 30. Aims to fill a gap in students’ music education that is too often overlooked: the ability to write, notate, record and perform one’s own music. $300.

NEW! Rock Ensemble, Grades 5 to 12, Saturdays, 1:30 to 3 p.m., Jan. 12 to March 30. Up to 8 students will form a rock band and play music from across rock music’ repertoire, from 1950’s rock and roll through modern indie rock. $300.

Visual Arts

(New projects accommodate new and returning students.)

Cartooning, Grades 2 to 6, Mondays, 4:10 to 5:10 p.m., Feb. 11 to May 20. Students design their own characters & use them in one-panel cartoons and three-panel comic strips. Study facial expressions and body language as it relates to cartooning and the human figure. TV storyboards and caricature included. $260.

NEW! Art in Movement: Drawing, Yoga, Dance, Grades 3 to 6, Tuesdays, 4 to 5:30 p.m., Feb. 5 to April 9. Explore the study of movement and figure drawing. This class combines the art of yoga and dance with learning basic techniques of drawing and sketching. $200.

Art Studio, Grades 1 to 5, Wednesdays, 3:45 to 4:45 p.m., Jan. 30 to May 15. Students will create developmentally appropriate art projects using the elements of art. A variety of media and techniques explored. $260.

Drawing/Painting, Grades 5 to 9, Wednesdays, 5 to 6:30 p.m., Jan. 23 to May 8. All levels welcome. Students will use traditional and experimental materials to draw figures, landscapes, portraits, still life, as well as images from their imaginations. Technical drawing skills developed and creativity encouraged. $330.

Digital Photography, Grades 4 to 6, Fridays, 4:40 to 5:40 p.m., Feb. 8 to May 17. Learn to use a digital device to take great photos with the rule of thirds, filling the frame, negative space, color, texture and scales. $240.

FOR ADULTS

Theater

NEW! Adult Playwriting, Mondays, 7 to 9 p.m., Feb. 4 to March 18. A six-week workshop, led by internationally produced playwright Jason Pizzarello. Writers conquer the blank page by focusing on core story building blocks: character, conflict, structure, dialogue, dramatic action and theatricality. $300.

NEW! Scene Study, Thursdays, 7 to 9 p.m., April 4 to May 17. Led by Carole Claps, director of Darien’s Got Talent. A traditional acting and scene study class for those with a love of performing or who have wondered what it would be like to act on stage. $300.

Ballet, Pop Pilates, Midday Yoga, Martial Arts for Adults

$20 drop-in fee. 10-class card for $180

Visual Arts

Watercolor Painting, Tuesdays, 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., Jan. 15 to April 2. For all levels. Focus will be on understanding the fundamentals of watercolor, technique and composition. $340.

Oil Painting Workshop, Wednesdays, 7 to 9 p.m., Jan. 16, 23, & 30. All levels welcome. Students will learn essentials painting techniques: color theory, composition, brushwork & more. $140.

Music
