Two cartons of cigarettes valued at $89 apiece and some other items were stolen from a closet used by the small newspaper/coffee stand inside Darien Railroad Station.

The items were last seen at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 27 by the person running the news stand. When that person returned at 4 p.m. that day, the items were gone from the closet. The person who runs the news stand had accidentally left the storage closet unlocked when closing up the shop at 9 a.m.

A look at video surveillance recordings at the station showed (at about 1:45 p.m.) a heavy-set black male wearing a maroon sweatshirt and tan pants removing a carton of cigarettes from inside his jacket pocket and putting it into a blue duffel bag, then boarding a westbound train shortly afterward.

Also taken from the closet: an open pack of lighters valued at $256, six rolls of toilet paper valued at $5 and five packs of Marlboro Red cigarettes valued at $10 a piece. All of that, added up, amounts to $258.

The person running the news stand waited to see the surveillance recording, then reported the theft to police on Friday, Oct. 30.
