An 18-year-old daughter arguing with her mother over the painting of a toenail led to a call to police on June 24 and charges against the daughter, according to a police report.

Darien police gave this account (an accusation not proven in court) of the incident:

The mother gave the following account:

When the mother got home from work, her daughter said her toenail had broken and asked the mother to file it down, cut it and paint it for her.

Initially, the mother (who was tired) refused but later she agreed to her daughter’s request.

Then the daughter didn’t think that a good enough job was done and demander her mother cut the toenail more.

Then the daughter complained that her mother cut the toenail too short, grabbed the toenail clipper and cut the toenail herself.

Then the daughter demanded that her mother remove the nail polish from her toes and repaint them for her. The mother said she didn’t have time.

At that point the daughter started to yell at her mother, who stepped outside in an attempt to let the situation calm down.

It didn’t.

The daughter locked the door on her mother and wouldn’t let her back in for 10 minutes. When she let her mother in, she again asked her to repaint the daughter’s toenails. The mother agreed to her daughter’s request.

As the mother repainted the toenails, she lectured her daughter on her behavior.

At that point, the daughter began hitting her mother on the head with both of her hands. Her mother started to walk away, and the daughter hit her on the back. When her mother tried to walk to her bedroom, the daughter blocked her way and pulled a chunk of hair out of her head.

The daughter also gave her account to police. She said:

She had just painted her fingernails and didn’t want to damage them, so asked her mother to take care of her toenail. She admitted that she complained when her mother cut her toenail too short and locked her mother outside.

Her mother yelled at her when she came back into the house and pushed her, so she pushed her mother back. At one point she blocked her mother from going into her mother’s bedroom.

The daughter was issued a misdemeanor summons for disorderly conduct and appeared in state Superior Court in Stamford the next day.
