The Music Department of the Darien Public Schools is pleased to announce an exciting opportunity for all current third and fourth grade students to be a part of our award winning Darien Band program.

All current third and fourth grade students in the Darien Public Schools who wish to begin learning a band instrument in the fall of this year are invited and encouraged to attend the beginning Band informational evening meeting to be held in the Tokeneke School Common Room at 7 p.m., Thursday, June 7. This presentation will be for interested students and their parents in all five of Darien’s Elementary Schools. An explanation of our Band program, instrument demonstrations, instrument rental program information, and class registrations for this fall will take place at this time. All interested students entering 4thor 5th grade in the fall are eligible to begin Band instrument instructions. All students attending these sessions must be accompanied by an adult. Information regarding this opportunity for students will also be distributed to students in their respective schools.

Seven DHS Students Chosen for All-State Music Festival

Seven outstanding musicians from Darien High School were chosen through a highly competitive statewide audition process and participated in the Connecticut Music Educators Association 2018 All-State Music Festival.  

The rehearsals and the concerts for the festival took place at Connecticut Convention Center in Hartford on April 19-21 in conjunction with the state-wide CMEA conference. __________

The Darien students had the privilege of working in musical ensembles with Connecticut’s most accomplished high school musicians conducted by nationally renowned conductors and educators. Richard Sadlon, the Darien Public Schools director of music said, “These students are among the finest school musicians in our state and we are all extremely proud of their accomplishments and for representing Darien High School and our entire town so well at this prestigious state-wide event.”

Middlesex Middle School Students Selected to Participate in Music Festival

The Music Department of the Darien Public Schools is proud to announce that band and Jazz Ensemble students from Middlesex Middle School were chosen to participate in the 2018 Connecticut Western Region Middle School Music Festival. — an announcement from the DPS Music Department

The students were chosen to perform in the festival based on their competitive audition scores and earned the privilege of performing in honors ensembles with some of the best middle school musicians in Western Connecticut. The students joined with other students from throughout Western Connecticut on March 16-17 at Wilton High School and were conducted by renowned conductors and educators. The festival is an annual event sponsored by the Connecticut Music Educators Association. Pictured above:

DHS Jazz Ensemble Gets Third Place at Berklee College Jazz Festival

The Darien High School Jazz Ensemble placed third in their division at the Berklee College of Music Jazz Festival in Boston on Saturday, February 10.

The Berklee Jazz Festival is the largest high school Jazz festival in the country and featured nearly 200 competing bands and ensembles from 138 participating schools from 15 states including Illinois, Puerto Rico, Florida and even as far away as California.  

The Darien Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of Jonathan Grauer performed three selections, “Lu’s Blues,” “Better Get Hit in Your Soul,” and “Whiplash.”

“I am very pleased with our performance on Saturday,” Grauer said. “Our kids really worked hard and it showed in their performance. This is the highest that we have ever placed at this Festival.”

Darien drummer Anan Durango received the ensemble’s outstanding soloist award for his solo work on “Whiplash.”

The Darien HS Jazz Ensemble has upcoming performances at the Darien Jazz Jamboree on March 2, the Norwalk Jazz Festival on March 9, the King Jazz Festival in Stamford on March 11 and the Greenwich Ellington Jazz festival on March 24.

The Darien Public Schools Music Department on Friday afternoon announced the nearly three dozen winners of this year’s Music For Youth poster, art and writing contests. Here’s the announcement, emailed and posted on the department blog:
The 2018 Music for Youth Contests focused on the “Music of Russia! Curriular Focus Theme for the 2017-18 School year. All posters will be displayed in the lobby of the DHS auditorium for the Barynya Music Ensemble performance on April 17. Hindley

Touring Russian Singers Perform at Darien High School

The Darien High School Music Department hosted the St. Petersburg Men’s Ensemble from Russia for a performance recently. The award-winning Russian vocal quartet, currently on their East Coast tour, was able to arrange an afternoon performance for our students at DHS. The group performs a wide range of musical styles ranging from Russian Sacred music and folk songs to vocal literature composed by famous masters such as Tchaikovsky, Stravinsky and Rachmaninov. Students and staff enjoyed an inspiring musical performance followed by a question and answer session about Russian music and culture.
