Catalytic Converters Stolen From Under More Vehicles

Darien police gave out this information on the latest thefts of catalytic converters in town. One theft occurred in the victim’s driveway on Noroton Avenue; the other, in the parking lot for Darien Post Office. When a vehicle was parked at 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday, April 26 in the driveway of the victim’s home on Noroton Avenue, not far from the Noroton Heights Fire Department building, the catalytic converter was still in it. At 6:30 p.m., the next day, the victim started the vehicle again and heard a loud sound that he realized was caused by the absence of a catalytic converter. He looked under the vehicle and confirmed it.

Sometime between 3 p.m., March 11 and 11:30 a.m. the next day, the catalytic converter on a vehicle parked at Darien Train Station was stolen, the victim told police. The victim said he discovered the theft after he started the vehicle and determined the loud noise coming from it was the result of the theft. He called police at 11:48 a.m.

Two More Catalytic Converters Stolen from Vehicles in Darien Parking Lots

The two latest thefts of catalytic converters from vehicles in Darien parking lots took place over a six-day period last week. The first theft took place on Monday, Feb. 14 in the parking lot of Whole Foods Market at 150 Ledge Road. The victim told police he parked his vehicle there at 3 p.m. When he returned at 9:45 p.m., he noticed that the muffler was noisy. The second theft took place in one of the parking lots at the Darien Professional Building at the corner of Hecker Avenue and Noroton Avenue.

Catalytic converters were stolen from four different vehicles at three locations in Darien, police were told during a four-day period last week, from Feb. 7 to 11. Two vans owned by the same business on Noroton Avenue had their converters removed (another pair of catalytic converter thefts happened to a business’s vans at 320 Post Road on Feb. 3). Catalytic converters in Darien are again the targets of thieves, who have been stealing them wherever and whenever they can — during the day, at night, at a school parking lot, at an office building parking lot. It’s not just happening in Darien. According to an Associated Press report on Jan. 2:

“Thefts of the exhaust emission control devices have jumped over the past two years as prices for the precious metals they contain have skyrocketed. Thieves can expect to get anywhere from $50 to $300 if they sell the converters to scrap yards, which then sell them to recycling facilities to reclaim the precious metals inside, including platinum, palladium and rhodium.”
