Letter from State Rep. Terrie Wood, Replying to Spencer McIlmurray

Oct. 5, 2015

To the Editor,

I read with interest the letter in the Darienite recently from Spencer McIlMurray, a candidate for the Board of Selectmen. He has joined a number of us, in recognizing that the affordable housing statute 8-30g is discriminatory toward seniors. By naming those in Hartford who have proposed legislation to address this, and stating that I should join them and “engage vigorously,” Mr. McIlmurray demonstrates a lack of understanding of my deep involvement in this issue – something that I feel compelled to correct. In the last two legislative sessions 2014 and 2015 I have co-introduced bills, along with State Representative Jonathon Steinberg (D – Westport), that would amend the 8-30g affordable housing point system: awarding a full point instead of a half point, for senior affordable housing units.

To the editor:

Section 8-30g of the Connecticut General Statutes mandates that 10 percent of the housing stock in each municipality is qualified as affordable housing. Given this, one would think that determining what is needed to reach attainment would be a simple mathematical calculation, right?

Letters: McIlmurray Says Sini Should Have Recused; Sini Responds

Spencer McIlmurray, an unaffiliated candidate for a seat on the Board of Selectmen running against both Democrats and Republicans, sent in this letter to the editor regarding Planning & Zoning Commission member John Sini’s decision not to recuse himself on matters concerning town-owned athletic fields. In response, Sini sent in the statement published below the letter. Paul Michalski, who lives near the high school fields, fought proposals concerning them before the P&Z Commission and asked Sini to recuse himself. Sini, long a proponent of more lighting at the fields before he got on the commission, refused. Michalski sued the town over decisions to make improvements (particularly to improve the turf) in the fields and lost.

Letter: McIlmurray Will Work to Keep Darien Affordable for Seniors

To the editor:
Seniors age 65 and over comprise 12% Darien’s residents who worry that escalating taxes would preclude them continuing to live in their Darien homes through their retirement years. As a candidate for Selectman, Spencer McIlmurray is concerned as Hartford continues to hammer
Fairfield County with taxes destined to help support the burgeoning
state budget with little concern for Darien and its seniors. How many of our senior residents have already left Darien because of escalating taxes? On Nov. 3, I hope you will vote Spencer to our Board of Selectmen, working with our existing team to keep Darien affordable for seniors.’

Selectman Candidate Spencer McIlmurray Wants Concerted Effort Against State Interference

Darien town officials need to counter state interference in local taxing, zoning and housing decisions with strategies that show state lawmakers that Town Hall is addressing problems better than the state can, says Spencer McIlmurray, one of four GOP candidates for selectman. Registered Republicans will meet 7 p.m. Monday at a town caucus to select a nominee from four candidates. McIlmurray and Kip Koons are the two candidates endorsed by the Republican Town Committee. Koons, however, has said he’s running on a “ticket” with First Selectman Jayme Stevenson (who is unopposed within the Republican Party) and incumbent Selectman Susan Marks, who was not endorsed. Joe Warren is also a candidate for one of the two spots.
