Police: Darien Man, 30, Smoked Pot, Texted While Driving, Crashed Into Tree

A 30-year-old Darien man told police he was texting when he hit a tree as he was driving on Hollow Tree Ridge Road, and police smelled marijuana in his car, then found some, police said. He wasn’t injured in the accident, but the 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt he was driving was disabled, police said. Darien police described what happened with this account, including accusations not proven in court:

Matthew Byrne was driving about 270 feet south of his home at 290 Hollow Tree Ridge Road and texting on his phone when, he later told police, his foot slipped off the pedal, causing him to leave the roadway and strike a tree. The accident was reported to police at 6:23 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 2.

UPDATE, 3:24 p.m.: The road was reopened by 12:13 p.m., when Darien police announced the reopening on Twitter. Original article, 9:25 a.m.: A traffic accident Thursday on Noroton Avenue resulted in a utility pole getting severed, and the street remains closed to traffic until maybe 5 p.m., in an area between its intersection with Hecker Avenue and Baker Park, police said. Only minor injuries were involved in the motor vehicle accident early Thursday evening, police said. At 8:47 p.m., Thursday, police posted this announcement on Facebook:

Two Killed in Head-on Crash Close to Darien on Norwalk’s Connecticut Avenue

Two men died in a head-on crash just before 10:11 p.m., Monday on Connecticut Avenue close to the Darien-Norwalk border. Anyone who may have seen the accident is asked to to contact Norwalk police. Norwalk police described what happened with this account:

Police who responded to the 10:11 p.m. report went to the scene, in front of DoubleTree Hotel at 789 Connecticut Avenue. They found two cars on the roadway, each with extensive damage. Norwalk firefighters extricated two men who were a dead in one of the cars; in the other, a male was found with serious injuries, extricated by firefighters and taken to Norwalk Hospital by ambulance.
