State Senate Candidate Greg Ehlers: Darien, Norwalk Get Tiny Fraction Back of $ Sent to Hartford

To the editor:

Does voting for an incumbent with seniority in the senate provide you and your family with better representation in Hartford? Over the past 14 years, Norwalkers seem to have wagered that because of the apparent power Senate Majority Leader Bob Duff has accumulated over the course of his political career, they will receive special benefits from the state as a result.

I am a business owner in a fast-paced global economy.  I can’t rely on gut feelings when I make decisions about my business and my children’s’ futures.  I have to take a look at the numbers to see if they support my initial hunches.  That’s why I decided to test what Bob Duff’s “power of incumbency” means for parents, business owners, and all residents who pay taxes in Norwalk. Let’s take the ratio of taxes paid to the state versus state payments to municipalities, numbers that the nonpartisan Office of Fiscal Analysis and Department of Revenue Services compile. This is a pretty good indicator, since it measures how much funding your town gets in return for every dollar you and your neighbors pay to Hartford. The results are, to say the least, astonishing.  Or, in the case of many Norwalk and Darien families who live paycheck to paycheck, these results are infuriating and wholly unacceptable.

Letter: Gov. Malloy, General Electric and the Road to Ruin

To the editor:

It is hard to say what caused more of a celebration this week in Boston: the Patriot’s win in the NFL divisional round or the acquisition of General Electric as a new Massachusetts business entity. Of course, neither win came cheap, with the Boston Globe estimating that for GE Boston will chip in $20 million in property tax relief and the state $120 million in tax incentives. Clearly, Connecticut was in no financial condition to match such a large offer; the state is locked down in financial crisis mode. The winning bidder’s tax incentives are proof that Senate President Martin M. Looney assertion that “it is clear that GE’s decision has nothing to do with taxes” does not wash. Senate Majority Leader Bob Duff said “G.E. will still have thousands of employees in Connecticut.”

It is no surprise that Martin Looney and Bob Duff reacted so defensively.

Darien’s Democratic Legislators, Governor Announce Grant to Buy Hecker Ave Land

Darien’s three Democratic legislators in the General Assembly announced Friday that the town has been awarded $137,500 to buy 1.245 acres of land overlooking Stony Brook on Hecker Ave. A news release from the state Senate Democrats office mentioned state Sens. Bob Duff and Carlo Leone and state Rep. William Tong, but not Republican state Rep. Terrie Wood, a past president of the Darien Land Trust and founder and first chairman of the Darien Environmental Group. The parcel of land is in Wood’s and Leone’s districts, not in Duff’s or Tong’s. All members of the public can use lands bought through this particular state program.
