The Swap Shop at the Darien Transfer Station and Recycling Center is opening Monday for the first time since the pandemic closed it, town officials have announced, and they’ve explained why the shop won’t be open on Saturdays yet.
A homeless man, frequently in town, whose address is listed as a Darien post office box, was arrested after he was found sleeping in the downtown Post Office, police said.

The project to replace Old Town Hall Homes is expected to get $6 million in state funding at Wednesday’s meeting of the State Bond Commission, state Sen. Bob Duff said in a news release. Update: The money was approved.
The project to replace all the concrete platforms at Noroton Heights Railroad Station is officially not due to be over until June 2019, according to the state Department of Transportation, but Darien Public Works Director Edward Gentile doesn’t believe it.
He thinks commuters will be more likely to be using the new platform by this coming Christmas.

Lard Dog and the Band of Shy perform the Melissa & Doug series of free, Wednesday children’s concerts at Levitt Pavilion in downtown Westport. The Wednesday, July 25 concert runs from 7 to 8:15 p.m.
Police Chief Ray Osborne recently responded to questions from Darien Police Commission Chairman J. Paul Johnson about the pattern typically followed by thieves stealing from vehicles Darien drivers leave unlocked outside overnight.
Five unlocked vehicles were entered, with items taken from some of them, on Hickory Lane and nearby Deepwood Road overnight from Monday to Tuesday, and one of them was stolen, police said.
That same night, three other unlocked vehicles, along with another that appears to have been unlocked were entered at various other locations in town. Bridgeport police found the car and arrested two early the next morning.
Darien Police Chief Ray Osborne said in a statement released Monday afternoon that an investigation of accusations involving criminal conduct against students by staff at Darien High School has concluded that there isn’t evidence that any crimes took place.
Janet King has been hired as the new executive director of the Community Fund of Darien, replacing Carrie Bernier, who has accepted a job elsewhere.
A Darien resident, King has been director of volunteers at Person-to-Person in Darien for the last eight years.
