The Swap Shop at the Darien Transfer Station and Recycling Center is opening Monday for the first time since the pandemic closed it, town officials have announced, and they’ve explained why the shop won’t be open on Saturdays yet.
As summer winds down, it’s time for back-to-school shopping. Here are some tips to not only help you save time and money but to do with your kids to help teach them about money, budgeting and organizing.
A reinspection of a restaurant that was given a “C” rating (the worst) resulted in the restaurant getting another “C” rating in the seven most recent health inspection reports released by the Darien Health Department.
Of the other six establishments, two received A ratings and four got A’s. All the inspections took place from Aug. 6 to 15.
Darien has been notified by the Connecticut Department of Public Health that the town once again meets the renewal requirements for being designated as a “HEARTSafe Community.”

JigJam, playing Irish music and bluegrass, will perform a free outdoor concert from 8 to 9:30 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 16 at the Levitt Pavilion in Westport.
Starting next week, through Sept. 3, there will be only limited lifeguard coverage at both Weed Beach and Pear Tree Point Beach, the Parks & Recreation Department has announced.

Greenwich resident Ned Lamont beat the felonious Bridgeport Mayor Joe Ganim by 88.2 percent to 18.8 percent across the state. In Darien, the percentage difference was much higher: 94.31 percent to 5.69 percent.
Only two other towns in the entire state were more supportive of Lamont over Ganim:

After the discovery that an underground line was closer to the edge of the Darien High School building than originally thought, the project to expand the cafeteria this summer was delayed for weeks as plans were revised.
Now that it’s on track, it will still be incomplete by the start of school, but the project is “for the most part, on time and on budget,” Jill McCammon, the building committee chair told the Board of Selectmen on Monday night.

A 58-year-old man was driving while under the influence in Darien late Monday afternoon, Aug. 6, and the unregistered car he was driving had a license plate from another car on it, police said. And the man had a suspended driver’s license, police added.
A 42-year-old Darien woman was charged with disorderly conduct after a confrontation with a family member turned physical, although no one was injured, police said.
A bat captured Aug. 1 inside of a home on Tommys Lane in New Canaan has tested positive for rabies at the state laboratory, according to officials in the Animal Control section of the New Canaan Police Department.
