New DAC Kids’ Theatre Director Named, and She’s Teaching New Classes

The Darien Arts Center is pleased to announce new Kids’ Theatre offerings and welcome Heather Kahlert as its new Kids’ Theatre director.

Heather Kahlert, Kids’ Theatre Director at the Darien Arts Center is a trained actor, director and puppeteer with almost 30 years of experience. Kahlert is teaching several new theatre classes at the DAC for children from preschool to middle school age. Classes begin in February and run through May.

Kahlert is a trained actor, director and puppeteer who has worked in theatre in New York City and Fairfield County for almost 30 years. She has served as a producer, artistic director, performer, stage manager, costumer and props maker, as well as a teacher during her professional career.

Kahlert holds a BA in Theatre Arts from SUNY New Paltz’ School of Fine and Performing Arts and is excited to bring her love of theatrical performance to DAC students.

Her enthusiasm is palpable as she comments, “I believe there is a place for everyone in the world of theatre!” Having worked in many aspects of theatre production, Kahlert is well-equipped to nurture the varied interests of her students.

The DAC’s new theatre offerings for children will reflect her experience and span age groups from preschool through middle school:

  • In Creative Dramatics for ages 3-5, young children are introduced to theatre with games, rhymes, costumes, puppets and more to discover the magic of performing. It is offered on Tuesdays, Feb. 23-May 17, or Thursdays, Feb. 25-May 19, from 10:30-11:15 a.m. (Cost is $190 with a $25 registration fee).
  • Beginning Acting is for grades K-2, on Tuesdays from 4-5 p.m., Feb. 23-May 17. It is a class where play and story are joined; children will work in a group in a non-stressful and encouraging atmosphere, developing methods of expression and awareness. (Cost is $210, $25 registration fee.)
  • Actor’s Toolbox for grades 3-5, gets the young actor up and doing with short skits, stage movement, use of props and costumes. The last class is a showcase for family and caregivers. It is offered on Thursdays, from 3:45-4:45 p.m., Feb. 25-May 19. ($210, $25 registration fee.)
  • For middle school students in grades 6-8, Kahlert and the DAC are offering Lights, Camera, Action! This class focuses on developing skills for acting and directing with video cameras. Filmed short skits and monologues will become part of a fun showcase of video clips. Offered on Thursdays, 5-6 p.m., Feb. 25-May 19. ($210, $25 registration fee.)
