As a new member of the Darien community following a 30-year Navy career, I wanted to get involved in something that brought meaning to the community and gave back to veterans.

Collecting for Wreaths Across America in Darien.

The gathering of the community at the beginning of the holiday season to place wreaths on the graves of our veterans is a tremendously moving event, and it reminds us through-out the season to remember our veterans.

This amazing event is only possible due to the generosity of the great Darien community. The wreath laying ceremony this year will be held at noon on 14 Dec. 14 at Spring Grove Veterans’ Cemetery.

Last year, a wreath covered almost every one of the 2,184 graves in the veterans’ section of the Spring Grove Cemetery.

If you are interested in volunteering to support this great event, please email John Carter at jcarter233@gmail.com. Volunteers are needed to assist in collecting funds, organizing the annual fundraising event, and during the day of the wreath laying.

The next collections will occur at Darien Diner, Oct. 26, and Palmers Market on Sunday morning, Oct. 27. The first Annual Fundraiser/Silent Auction will be held at the Darien VFW on Nov. 15.

The public is encouraged to purchase wreaths sponsorships. Wreaths can be ordered from the WAA website with the Group ID code of CT0007 and the Location Code of CTSGVD.

If you prefer to pay by check, please note the codes above on the check /order form so that the wreaths arrive at the Darien location. The mailing address is WAA, P.O. Box 249 Columbia Falls, ME 04623.
