Darien: Make a Joyful Noise for Five Minutes to Honor, Thank Healthcare Workers, First Responders

April 11 @ 7:00 pm - 7:05 pm

Noroton Fire Department block party 2019

First Selectman Jayme Stevenson is asking town residents to express gratitude with a loud “Thank you” to first responders and healthcare workers, specifically by ringing a bell, banging a pot or otherwise making ourselves heard for five minutes, starting at 7 p.m., Saturday, April 11.

“Residents are invited to join along. Stand on your front lawn or your front steps and ring cowbells, shake holiday bells, bang pots and pans or simply clap hands. Wave to your friends and neighbors,” Stevenson said in an announcement.

“Let’s all show our town spirit, share our thanks and enjoy some smiles and waves — at a distance — as we all come together for a few moments to celebrate the heroes among us and spread good cheer!”

First responders include the volunteers in Darien’s three fire departments, town police and the Darien EMS-Post 53 ambulance service, as well as any first responders anywhere.

They and health care workers are not only doing harder work than normal (and doing it in uncomfortable protective gear), but also putting themselves in danger while they’re on the frontlines of the fight against COVID-19. Stevenson is promoting an event that lets you cheer them on.

This isn’t the only event of its kind related to the COVID-19 crisis. In New York City, it’s become a recent tradition to cheer on healthcare workers once a day, during a time when many are going to or from work on a shift change.

Here’s the full-text of Stevenson’s announcement for the Saturday event throughout town:

Darien residents are invited to join together to celebrate our heroic healthcare professionals and first responders on Saturday, April 11, from 7 to 7:05 p.m.

Our town’s churches will ring their bells and first responders will be out on the streets honking and blowing horns.

Residents are invited to join along. Stand on your front lawn or your front steps and ring cowbells, shake holiday bells, bang pots and pans or simply clap hands. Wave to your friends and neighbors.

Let’s all show our town spirit, share our thanks and enjoy some smiles and waves — at a distance — as we all come together for a few moments to celebrate the heroes among us and spread good cheer!

All citizens are encouraged to participate.

— Jayme Stevenson, first selectman
