After an early morning phone call Wednesday to police from a woman who said she just saw a neighbor’s vehicle burglarized by two people, Darien police arrested them both.
Darien police described the incident today (Wednesday, May 4) with this account (including accusations not proven in court):
A resident of Intervale Road told police at 5:30 a.m. to report the burglary she said she’d just seen. Several officers went to the area.
Nearby, on Devon Road, Officers Daniel Noto and Daniel Gorton found a subject who matched the caller’s description. Police determined the subject, a 17-year-old Stamford boy, was one of the two burglars, and they arrested him.
“The suspect then intentionally misdirected officers to prevent them from locating the second suspect,” according to a Police Department announcement about the burglary.
“A short time later Officer Michael Cummings observed a subject matching the description of the second suspect in the woods in nearby Woodland Park,” the announcement said. That subject, Karon McCollom, 18, of Orchard Street in Stamford, didn’t give himself up to the officer without a struggle, so a taser was used on him.
The two teenagers were found to have on them many checkbooks, cell phones, chargers, wallets, sunglasses, a watch and loose change. Police determined that 10 vehicles — each of them unlocked — had been entered.
Each teenager was charged with 10 counts of third-degree burglary, 10 counts of conspiracy to commit third-degree burglary, third-degree larceny, conspiracy to commit third-degree larceny and interfering with a police officer. The juvenile was also charged with possession of marijuana.
Police issued the 17-year-old a summons to appear in Juvenile Court and held McCollom on a $100,000 bond for the Darien charges. McCollum was also charged with failure to appear in court in connection with an unrelated arrest charging him with robbery in Stamford. The bond for that is $15,000.
