Some Darien High School students walked out of class Friday morning, joining a second nationwide walkout protest a bit over a month since the last one, on March 14, the Darien News reported. This time, the walkout, starting at 10 a.m., was planned for the entire rest of the school day, a much smaller number of students participated, some students marched down Noroton Avenue toward the Noroton Heights Railroad Station to catch a train for a protest in New York City, and school administrators warned students that they would face disciplinary measures if they walked out, the newspaper reported. _________

Strategies for Getting the Right Airline Seat, or Any Seat on Metro-North: Cameron on Transportation

It was the British folks at the Cunard cruise line who said: “Getting there is half the fun.”

Crossing the Atlantic in style on an ocean liner certainly was great, but whatever your mode of transportation, getting the right seat can make for an enjoyable or miserable trip. On Metro-North, I usually go for a window seat. However, on crowded trains, any seat is better than none. But I can still get an “upgrade” if I pay attention. Heading into New York, I watch for people getting off the train in Stamford.

Darien Man Fleeced Out of $4,600 in Classic Check Fraud Scheme

If you accept a check from someone you don’t know, don’t use part of the proceeds to send money back to the stranger. No matter what the circumstances. That’s the advice police and the Federal Trade Commission give to everyone, because scamming victims this way with false checks is a longstanding problem — one that victimized a 67-year-old Darien man who runs a photography business from his home. Here’s the police account of what happened:

Someone who appeared to be a potential client of the business contacted the Darien man and offered to hire him for a job. The stranger, who called himself “Daniel Mitri,” said he would send the man a check for $4,100 for a photo shoot.

And although there were 12 fewer homes selling during the first quarter, there was an increase of 16 pending sales for that same time period. The average sales price for a home in Darien decreased by 6.5 percent in the first quarter of 2018 versus the same time period in 2017, from $1, 596,367 in 2017 to $1,492,622 in 2018. Darien Street Parking Violations Will Cost More, to Match Parking Lot Violations

If you get a parking ticket on a Darien street, it’s now going to cost you double or even triple what it cost before: Most violations are doubling, from a $15 ticket to $30 one, and $60 if not paid within 15 days. The Darien Board of Police Commissioners raised the price of tickets for violations on streets (which the commission controls) to match the fines for town parking lots (which the Board of Selectmen controls and already raised). The board held a short public hearing Wednesday at 3:45 p.m., in which no member of the public showed up (it was unclear how much the hearing had been publicized) and then unanimously voted to raise the fines at the board’s regular meeting at 4 p.m.

Little discussion took place before the vote. The Board of Selectmen requested that the police commissioners raise the fines. Here’s a list of the violations and what you’ll pay if you get ticketed for them.

Darien Woman, 37, Charged Again, This Time in a Minor Domestic Violence Incident

For the fifth time since September, a Darien woman has been charged by police, most recently on a disorderly conduct charge connected with a minor domestic violence incident, her second one in Darien. Adaobi Kurylov and a man she was in a confrontation with were each charged with disorderly conduct after an incident on Tuesday, April 10 in the Avalon Darien apartment complex off of Hollow Tree Ridge Road, police said. This is how Darien police described the incident, including accusations not proven in court:

As part of a divorce agreement, the man was giving a vehicle to Kurylov, and on Tuesday he went to Avalon Darien to deliver a case of water to her and take the license plates off the vehicle, the man told police. When Kurylov learned he had removed the license plates, she became angry, and an argument took place. The man said he tried to walk away and leave, but Adaobi followed him and “smacked” his telephone out of his hand.
