Darien High School felt more like an art museum Monday night as students, teachers and parents wandered hallways, open spaces, and corners of the Library for the annual 9th through 12th grade Art Show. The week-long show opened Monday and featured senior artists and those enrolled in Advanced Placement Art classes. In all, 1,200 pieces were collected from every student who had enrolled in an art course. They included a variety of drawings, ceramics, sculptures, photographs, and paintings. “This was a huge night for us,” said DHS teacher Jaclyn Sammis, who oversees the Art Department.

Darien Police: If Your Kids Are Drinking, Police May Charge You

At this time of year, the Darien Police Department typically sees an increase in the number of calls for gatherings where juveniles are consuming alcohol. This increase can be attributed to prom season, the end of the school year, and the return of college students to town. The Darien Police wanted to take this opportunity to remind parents and homeowners about the criminal consequences of allowing the consumption of alcohol by juveniles at their homes. — an announcement from Darien Police

Various social-host and underage-possession charges can be brought against any parent or homeowner who either; actively participates in allowing juveniles to possess or procure alcohol, or passively allows the possession/consumption to take place. Most people are aware that allowing kids to drink in their home is illegal, but many don’t realize that the law allows for charges to be brought in situations where the police feel parents “should” have known underage drinking is a potential.

Package Delivered, FedEx Says, But Post Road Resident Says She Never Got It

FedEx says it delivered a package to a Post Road resident living near the road’s intersection with Hollow Tree Ridge Road, but the resident says she never got it. The woman told police she ordered the package from Amazon on May 7, but when she didn’t see it by May 16, she contacted FedEx to see what happened to it. She was told it had been delivered at 9:18 a.m. on May 10. The woman said she was home most of that day and has three dogs that she believed would have barked if someone came to her front porch. Police asked neighbors if they had seen anything suspicious, but nothing came of that effort.

Former First Selectman Evonne Klein Receives Award for Promoting Access to Housing

Former Darien selectwoman and current state Housing Commissioner Evonne Klein has received an award in part for “her efforts to expand access to affordable housing through legislative action that would discourage exclusionary zoning practices,” the state Department of Housing announced. Another reason she received the Edward M. Kennedy Legislative Advocacy Award from the Connecticut Fair Housing Center was for her efforts to “eliminate archaic and undefined terminology in the state’s zoning statutes,” the announcement said. “Breaking down the barriers to opportunity means acknowledging that the pockets of segregation in our society did not happen by chance,” Klein said.  “They were formed as a result of carefully crafted government policies in the early 1900s. “Exclusionary zoning, redlining, and housing discrimination are now illegal thanks to the federal Fair Housing Act of 1968,” she continued.  “However, the effect of their long term existence is a challenge we still face.  We need organizations like the Connecticut Fair Housing Center to work on the front lines, battling discriminatory housing practices and segregation each and every day.”
As co-chair of the state’s Fair Housing Working Group, Klein oversaw the introduction of five legislative proposals that would promote inclusivity and fairness — making Connecticut a better place to live, work, and raise a family. Each year, the center selects recipients who have made significant strides to bring fair housing issues to the forefront of the legislative process.

When, according to police an officer stopped a sport utility vehicle on Tokeneke Road with no tail lights on at 9:22 p.m., that alleged violation turned out to be the least of the driver’s problems.

Darien police described what happened with this account, including accusations not proven in court:

On Thursday evening, May 17, the officer saw a white Honda Odyssey headed in the direction of Norwalk. Since the SUV’s back lights weren’t on, the officer conducted a traffic stop near the intersection of Tokeneke Road and Cliff Avenue. The driver, Edwin Esquivel of 91 Ely Ave., Norwalk, initially told the officer his name was “Marvin Xar-Gomez.” The driver also didn’t have identification with him, including a driver’s license. Which, it turned out, doesn’t exist. Esquivel was sinking deeper into trouble anyway, since a records check showed Xar-Gomez name showed that driver had a suspended privilege to drive.

The Rise and Demise of New York City’s First Subway: Cameron on Transportation

A secret project, defying the government, helped build America’s first subway. It only ran for three years but carried hundreds of thousands of passengers, even though it only spanned 312 feet. And it was powered by air. In the 1860s, New York City was in a transportation crisis. The streets were jammed with horse-pulled trolleys and wagons, as many as 1,000 an hour passing a single point on lower Broadway.
