Katherine Margaret Simpson, 22, died on Nov. 15, in Chicago.
She was born in San Francisco on Feb. 9, 2000. It soon became apparent that the name “Katherine” did not fit the girl, so she was always called Kate or Katy or Kiki.
She spent the first 11 years of her life in the Town of Ross in Marin County, California.
In 2011, she moved east with her family, where she attended Middlesex Middle School and King School in Stamford.
On graduating from the Media School at Indiana University in May, Katy moved to Chicago to become director of student services at the Chicago Portfolio School.
This was Katy:
She loved animals but especially dogs and especially Maltese puppies. Her favorite, Bo, continues at this very hour to patrol and protect the family home in Connecticut.
She was organized, precise and attentive to detail. She won her job at the Chicago Portfolio School in part for the way she kerned her type.
She was smart and beautiful and funny. Her humor always carried a hint of subversion. Her laughter was music.
She was brilliantly creative. She might have been a writer or artist or designer or teacher and more.
“Might have been”: words that contain all our sorrow.
Peace, Kiki. We will miss you forever.
Katy is survived by her parents, Christine and Steve Simpson; her brother, William Simpson of Darien; grandfather, Patrick Grippe of Highlands Ranch, Colorado; Mike, Andrea, Drew and Maddie Grippe of Castle Pines, Colorado and Denver; Jeff, Ginger, James and Josie of Los Angeles; Keir Simpson of Shelbyville, Indiana; Tim, Valery and Jimmy Simpson of Albuquerque, New Mexico; Sarah Brown Ferrario; and Andrew, Oliver and Isabella Simpson of Silver Spring, Maryland.
A service celebrating Katy’s life will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, Dec. 9, 2022 at Noroton Presbyterian Church in Darien.
Friends wishing to honor Katy are asked to consider a donation to NamiCT.org or Vibrant.org, formerly the Mental Health Association of New York City.
