Geraldine McGovern, 91, beloved wife of the late George C. McGovern, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Aug. 29, 2021, at Heritage Hall Nursing Home in Agawam, Massachusetts. Her maiden name of “Friend” truly exemplified her kind, loving nature. “Gerry” grew up in Darien and attended Tufts University, where she met her future husband. Afterwards, she attended Katherine Gibbs Business College and worked as secretary for several doctors in the Darien area.

Elvira Maria McKiernan ‘Vera’ to her friends, family, and all those she knew and loved, passed from this world Sunday, Sept. 5, 2021 in the company of her beloved three sons, Robert Jr., Christopher and Mark. She joins her devoted husband Robert Joseph McKiernan, ‘Bob’, amid family and friends in God’s loving embrace. Born in Brooklyn, New York in 1932 to Michael and Rosalie Ignelzi (nee Lagana), she grew up in Flushing Queens. Like her father who, at the age of 13, came to America on his own, from the Province of Avellino in the Apennines Mountains of the Campania region of Italy to pursue a dream; Vera was known for her independent streak.

Paul “Mac” Mackenzie Groetzinger, a well-known Fairfield County restaurateur, died suddenly on Saturday, Aug. 28, 2021 at his home on Kiawah Island, South Carolina, surrounded by his loving life partner, Gina Zangrillo and close childhood friends. He was 69. Mac was born in Fremont, Nebraska on Feb. 24, 1952 and was raised in Stamford.

Margaret (Margie) Spindler Strauch, beloved wife of Dr. Gerald (Jerry) O. Strauch, was born into eternal life on Aug. 24, after a brief but lethal illness. She was 88. She is survived by her loving husband of 66 years, Dr. Gerald (Jerry) O. Strauch; her son, David; and her daughters, Susan (Manglano) and Jean (Myers). She is also survived by six wonderful grandchildren: Allie and Andrew Strauch; David, Ramon and Santi Manglano and Christopher Myers.

Always known as “Teeny,” she was born on May 25,1929 in Montclair, New Jersey. She matriculated from Montclair Kimberly Academy and was a proud graduate of Wells College in Aurora, New York, where she was a synchronized swimmer, chorale singer, and the May Queen.

McNamara Jr. and Noreen O’Connor McNamara, and he lived in California, Washington, D.C. and Connecticut before relocating to Houston in 2011. Mark was devoted to his family and loved spending time with Karen and Patrick.

William Harlowe Miller, Jr. of Norwalk, Connecticut passed away peacefully at Stamford Hospital on Aug. 30, after a long bout with dementia. He was 82. He was born on April 22, 1939 in Mineola, New York to William Harlowe Miller and Martha Clarke Miller of Lloyd Harbor, New York. Bill attended Phillips Exeter Academy (Class of 1957) where he played on the varsity soccer, ice hockey, and lacrosse teams. He then attended Princeton University, where he played on the varsity ice hockey team and was a member of the Ivy Club.

Judith Chase Roberts Skidd of Wilton died of natural causes at her home on Thursday, Aug. 26, 2021. She was 82. Judy was born in Roslyn, New York in April 1939, the daughter of Frederick G. Roberts and Doris Babcock Roberts. The family moved to Easton, then to Darien in 1949, which is where she met Thomas P. Skidd Jr., her loving husband of 57 years.

Lee was a U.S. Army veteran and self-employed in the construction business. Lee’s passion was his family, especially his grandsons, who brought him the greatest happiness and affectionately called him Pop.

Madeleine Murphy Pollock, a Darien and New Canaan resident for seven decades, has died at the age of 102. Madeleine Pollock died of natural causes at her home on Daniel Island, South Carolina where she had relocated in 2017. Mrs. Pollock was a member of the St. Thomas More Catholic church in Darien. She was also an active member of the Wee Burn Country Club, where she chaired the Ladies’ Golf Committee and enjoyed playing duplicate bridge.

Steven G. Lauten of Wilton passed away on Saturday, Aug. 21, at the age of 73 after a 2 1/2 year battle with cancer. He was the son of the late Fred and Gertrude Lauten. Born in Brooklyn, New York, Steve remained a true Brooklyn Dodgers fan for the rest of his life. He later moved to Yonkers, New York, where he graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1965.
