After the fiery accident involving trucks and a car on Interstate 95 early Thursday morning, the highway will remain closed through “at least Monday,” extra traffic will be on roads in Darien and other towns in the area, and town residents are being urged to stay off roads for the next several days if their trips are unnecessary, various officials said.
I-95 to remain closed thru “at least Monday,” Darien police said in a tweet on X. The Police Department “recommends avoiding unnecessary travel throughout our area for the next several days & to allow for extra time to get to destinations if you need to be on the roads,” the department tweeted on “X” (the former Twitter).
The start of Darien school on Friday will be delayed two hours “to give the staff and bus drivers sufficient time to manage the morning commute,” Darien Schools Superintendent Alan Addley said in an email to parents.
“Over the weekend the State Police will have established detours and alternate travel routes,” Addley said. “We fully expect to open school on time Monday morning.”
State officials said the now-damaged Fairfield Avenue bridge over the highway will need to be replaced and the roadway made safe for traffic, a process that could take days.

The fire on I-95 at the Fairfield Avenue bridge in Norwalk damaged the span so much that it will have to be taken down in the next couple of days to get the highway ready for travel again, Gov Ned Lamont said.
