Stanley Rand III (Sandy), 75, longtime resident of Riverside, passed away peacefully at home in Darien, surrounded by his devoted family on March 26, 2020. Sandy attended Brunswick School, graduated from Trinity Pawling School and attended Stetson University before serving in Vietnam as a Green Beret with the 5th Special Forces Group. Upon return from Vietnam, Sandy married his wife, Suzanne and lived in Riverside,  where they raised their family and he continued to build the family business. Sandy recently retired as chairman and chief executive officer of Rand Insurance Inc., a Riverside and New Canaan general insurance agency. Sandy built an amazing business and an even better family, which was his first love.

Jeanne Whitley Dailey passed away peacefully on March 20 at the age of 94. Born in Rochester, New York, she was the daughter of W. Raymond and Margaret Whitley. Jeanne graduated from the Convent of the Sacred Heart and attended Nazareth College in Rochester, where she was a member of the American Association of University Women and the New York Institute of Finance. She moved to Darien with her husband, Donald, and her son, where she belonged to the Middlesex Swim and Tennis Club as well as the Darien Boat Club. Jeanne worked for the former Union Trust Company and retired as a senior investment officer.

Gary Knapp, a resident of Stratford, passed away Friday, March 20, 2020 at St. Joseph’s Center in Trumbull. He was 72. 

Born in Greenwich on March 15, 1948, he was the son of the late Arthur R. and Vivian (Tryon) Knapp. Gary worked for the United States Post Office and served in the U.S. Navy. He is survived by his cousin, Barbara Talbot Cianflone.

Peter M. Ryan, 82, of Darien and formerly of Stamford, passed away of natural causes on Tuesday, March 24, 2020, at Stamford Hospital. He was born in Stamford on June 25, 1937, to the late Peter J. and Llewelyn Bernard Ryan. Peter Ryan was a practicing attorney, admitted to the state bars of Connecticut and New York. He argued before the United States Supreme Court. He specialized in commercial litigation among other legal work.

John E. Herman Jr. “Jack” passed on Sunday, Feb. 16, 2020, at Cape Cod Hospital with his loving family by his side after a period of declining health. Jack as he was known, was born in 1934 to John and Lillian Herman and grew up in Darien, graduating from Darien High School. Following graduation he tried to join the army, and even went so far as to try to “sneak” in — being 6’8” they wouldn’t take him, so he went to work for CL&P and then Southern New England Telephone, where he had a long career as a lineman and telephone repair man. He married Carol Sue Miller and resided in Norwalk while raising their children.

Lorraine Salvatore, a resident of Darien for 45 years, passed away peacefully sometime before dawn on Saturday, March 21. She was 86. One of seven Cloughley children, Lorraine moved from Jersey City, New Jersey to Stamford as a young woman just starting out. She found an apartment in the Cove section of Stamford, living above a lovely Italian woman she called Nonni. Nonni had a handsome young nephew who had immigrated from Italy a few years earlier.

Sharon K. (Edwards) Kells a 40-year resident of Darien, passed away on March 22 at age 73. Born Sept. 10, 1946 at home in Irwin, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Robert Edwards and Hazel Ruth Edwards both of Irwin. Sharon was a fraternal twin who was raised in rural Ohio with her four siblings (two sets of twins). Sharon loved and cherished eight of her beautiful grandchildren: Adrienne Ross, David ‘Trey’ Maloney, Carys Gallo, Mia Gallo, Charlie Gallo, Addison D’Acunto, Copper D’Acunto, and Collins D’Acunto.

Cheryl Sue Bergem, 77, died at her residence in Stamford, Connecticut, on March 18, 2020. Sue, as she was known, was born in Detroit on Nov. 30 1942, the daughter of Charles Edwin Davisson and Clara Myers Davisson. In 1982, she married Colonel Pierre Bergem who was second in command of the Luxembourg Army following World War II. Completing all her education in her home state of Michigan, Sue received a Bachelor of Science degree in business education from Eastern Michigan University and a Master of Science degree in the same field from the University of Michigan.

Judith Hennessey Beavers, 80, of West Norwalk, formerly of Darien, passed away March 10 with her family at her side. She was born in Evanston, Illinois, the only child of Susanne (Needham) and Raymond Hennessey. The family moved to Scarsdale, New York, where she attended the Ursuline School and then went on to Rosemont College in Pennsylvania, where she earned a B.A. in English. After graduating, she worked in radio/TV copy for BBDO Seidman Advertising in New York City. She later worked in sales for Celanese Fibers.
