Herman E. “Karl” Day, Jr., 82, of Greer, SC, passed away on June 22. Karl was born in Flint, MI, to Herman Eugene and Florence Ford Day. In 1957, he graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point with a bachelor’s degree in engineering, a devotion to America and a zest for life. Entering active duty as a 2nd lieutenant, Karl was an Army Ranger, Green Beret, as well as a member of the 82nd Airborne Division and the 10th Special Forces Group in Germany. He earned a masters in engineering at Michigan State and returned to West Point, where he taught ordinance courses and two electives for senior cadets on several subjects — propulsion, ballistics, automotive, and materials engineering — the only department officer qualified to do so.

Frank Grunert, 79, passed away on July 5, 2018 at Mountain Valley Hospice Facility in Gloversville, NY from complications following a motor vehicle/pedestrian accident. Frank was born on June 20, 1939 in Greenwich, the son of the late Robert and Constance (Wilkins) Grunert. He was a skilled auto mechanic and was previously employed at Allen Bros in Greenwich and H&L Chevrolet in Darien. He was a member of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Granville and a proud member of AA.

Edward J. Handler III of Darien, formerly of Short Hills, NJ, passed away peacefully in his family home at the age of 81. Mr. Handler was born on April 20, 1937. He was raised in Parkchester, the Bronx and attended Xavier High School in Manhattan and Braden’s Preparatory School in Cornwall, NY. He graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in the Class of 1960. Mr. Handler earned a law degree from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1964.

Graeme James Lindsay passed away peacefully in his sleep, June 30, 2018 at his home. Born in Oamaru, New Zealand to Norma and Stuart (deceased) Lindsay. Graeme attended St. Kevin’s College, and went on to become a Fulbright scholar and attend Massey University. He moved to the U.S. in 1975 with the NZ Meat Board and went on to run the NZ Lamb Co.

Joan D. Duffield, 89, of Darien, died peacefully at her home on June 29. Joan resided in Darien for the past 50 years, spending the last three years at Maplewood of Darien. She was born on Jan. 25, 1929 in Philadelphia to George and Helen Dippy. Joan graduated from high school in Scarsdale, NY and then went on to receive a B.A. from Hood College. She devoted her time in both high school and college playing field hockey, basketball and softball, excelling in all three.

Debra Ann Tracey, 54, passed away peacefully and surrounded by loved ones on Saturday June 23 at Bridgeport Hospital. Debra was born in Bronx, New York on Sept. 19, 1963 to Joan Baigis and John Murphy. Debra was a Pre-K teacher at the Putnam Indian Field School in Greenwich for 28 years. She taught with enthusiasm and compassion and was passionate about working with children.

Barbara H. Souders, 88, of Darien passed away at her home on June 23 with her loving husband, William, by her side. She was born on March 24, 1930 in Oak Park, IL to the late William and Lucille Huskey. Barbara attended Lake Forest College in Lake Forest, IL, where she met her husband and the love of her life, Bill. They married and eventually moved to New Canaan with their three children, Susan, Scott and Sally.  Barbara worked as an administrative assistant before she became a homemaker.

Linda Bush Davidson Head passed away on June 8, in the John Muir Medical Center in Concord, CA, from complications of colon cancer, attended by her son Carey and daughter-in-law Jill. She had lived in Concord for the last 10 months, having moved there recently from Hamilton, NY. Linda was born in Boston and grew up in various locations before settling in Southwestern Connecticut. While born with a severe hearing loss that later resulted in total lifelong loss of hearing, in her youth she loved reading and summer vacations in Rockport, MA. Linda graduated from high school in Greenwich and obtained her higher education at Gallaudet College and American University.

Janet Jackson Egert, beloved wife of the late Howard E. Egert passed away on June 21, 2018.  She was loving mother of Terrie E. Wood (Jay) of Darien, Connecticut, Stephen M. Egert of Lakewood and the late Scott P. Egert; grandmother of Lindsey ( Matt McMaster),  Kelly and Andrew Wood and sister of the late Philip G. Jackson. Janet, born in 1925, was daughter of Philip and Helen Gartshore Jackson, grew up in Wooster, Ohio and moved to Lakewood in 1942. She was one of the fastest swimmers in the United States in the early 1940’s, swimming the 50 and 100 yard freestyle in national AAU competition. Attending The Ohio State University, she was an active and lifelong member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. In 1949, she joined Lakewood Little Theater (now the Beck Center for the Arts) staff to teach radio and speech for their children’s theater program.

For more than 30 years, Dave started his day with his breakfast crew of Howie and Johnny and other old friends at their favorite: Jake’s in Darien. Dave was a man of Renaissance talents.

Through friends, he discovered Westport, MA, and made that his second home.
