John (Jack) Droney of Darien passed away peacefully on Saturday, Sept. 28.  He was 94. Jack was born April 29, 1925 to John and Kate (Howley) Droney in Bellharbour, County Clare, Ireland.  He was the youngest of four children, who also included Mary (Sisty Scarsbrook), Michael and Martin. Jack immigrated to the United Ståtes in 1947 with his cousin and lifelong friend, James (Gus) Droney. He arrived in New York, but soon ventured to Stamford to work as a carpenter/handyman for his uncle, Tom Howard, while attending night school at Wright Tech to hone his carpentry and maintenance talents.

George J. Walsh, who was among the last surviving U.S. Navy dive bomber pilots from World War II and an advertising executive during Madison Avenue’s go-go years in the ‘60s and ‘70s, died peacefully at home on Sept. 26. He was 98. Born in Brooklyn, New York on April 18, 1921, he was the son of George J. Walsh, a contractor and dock builder. His mother was the former Lillian O’Brien.

Albert J. Cass Jr., formerly of Darien and Fairfield, died peacefully on Sept. 3 in Warren, New Jersey. He was 91. Al was son of the late Albert and Ruth Cass of Boston, and a graduate of Boston College, Class of 1949. He served as a U.S. Marine Corps drill instructor and then went on to have a career in the paper business, starting out as a salesman, then became president of various paper companies until his retirement.

Louise Gockley, 94, a former longtime resident of Darien, passed away peacefully on Friday, Sept. 20. She was a resident at Heritage Village in Southbury since 1998 before moving to Pomperaug Woods in 2012. Louise was born in Boston on July 13, 1925 and was the daughter of Peter and Elidia Mazzola. Louise was raised in Quincy, Massachusetts and received her associates degree from Boston University.

Carol Whitney Harrington, 89, of Boca Grande, Florida and Manchester Village, Vermont, passed away peacefully on Sept. 18, surrounded by her adoring family. The cause of death was congestive heart failure. Mrs. Harrington, known to all as Whit, was born March 10, 1930 in Binghamton, New York to William and Helene Whitney. She moved to New Jersey at a young age graduating from Columbia High School in Maplewood, New Jersey in 1948.

Byron Jack Dugdale, age 94, died peacefully at his home in Darien on Sept. 21. He was born in Stamford and lived in Noroton Heights, as did his father, Jack and grandfather, William. He graduated from Darien High School, Class of 1944. He joined the Navy during World War II, serving onboard the troop carrier, USS General W.A. Mann, and working as a radio operator on Kodiak Island, Alaska.

Longtime Darien resident Julianna (“Julie”) Ashley Mortensen passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2019 at the age of 90, in Gainesville, Florida. Julie was born on July 20, 1929 in San Diego to Richard F. Kahle and Katherine Morrison Kahle. After her parents got divorced and her mother married Harold L. McClinton, Julie went by the name Julie McClinton. Julie graduated from Rosemary Hall in Greenwich, Connecticut in 1947 and attended Oberlin University in Ohio in 1948-1949.

Doris Schwanhausser Friend died peacefully in her sleep Thursday night. She had recently celebrated her 95th birthday with her family. Mrs. Friend was born in Brooklyn, New York, the daughter of the late Fredrick Schwanhausser Jr. and Eleanor Schmid Schwanhausser of Short Hills, New Jersey. She was a graduate of Kent Place School in Summit, New Jersey and Wellesley College. A longtime resident of Rowayton, South Norwalk and New Canaan, Mrs. Friend was very active in community affairs.
