Anona (Arata, Naphen) Broadman, 86, of Avon, a beloved sister, mother, grandmother and friend, passed away Nov. 18. Born in Darien, she was the daughter of the late George F. and Florence B. Arata. Nona was educated at the Masters School, Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. and Hollins College, Va. She married Peter Baker Naphen, living and raising their three sons in New Canaan until his untimely death.

James M. Baker, husband of Katharin Harvey Baker, passed away Saturday Nov. 18 at Atria Assisted/Senior Living in Darien. Born on Dec. 12, 1921 in New York City, he was the son of James A. and Lavinia Baker. Jim attended Kings School in Stamford and the Gunnery Prep School in Washington, Conn., where he enjoyed playing tennis and hockey. During World War II, James served his country in the Navy with the rank of First Class Petty Officer, performing the duties of a sonar technician from 1942-1945.

Selma Irene Lamensdorf, nee Cokely, born on July 29, 1930, passed away peacefully on Nov. 28. She was born in Providence, R.I. and raised in Warwick, R.I. Her parents were Mr. and Mrs. Merton F. Cokely, and she had an older brother, Kenneth. Born at the onset of the Great Depression, Selma was able to advance herself by earning an academic scholarship to Pembroke College (at the time, the sister school to Brown University). She majored in economics and graduated Magna Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa.

David Albert Koch passed away peacefully at his home in Darien on Nov. 30 after a long fight with brain cancer. He was 43. Mr. Koch was born on June 17, 1974, in Cleveland,  to Al and Bonnie Koch. He graduated from the University of Michigan in 1996 with a bachelor’s degree in business administration, and from Columbia University in 2004 with a master of business administration degree.

She was a graduate of Stamford public schools and retired from Dunlap & Associates in Darien. She was predeceased by her husbands, Howard J. Hoyt and Richard R. Frederick; a son, Allen H. Hoyt; a sister, Margaret Nizlek; and a brother, John J. Cherry.

Catherine Billingsley Sullivan, age 81, passed away peacefully and surrounded by family on Nov. 23 in Bennington, Vt. A former longtime resident of Scituate, Cathy was born and raised in Darien. While she enjoyed traveling and lived both overseas and in various locations on the East Coast, she was a Bay Stater at heart and a devoted fan of the Red Sox and Celtics. When she wasn’t performing daily maternal miracles, she loved going to art museums (the MFA and ICA were particular favorites), watching movies (Alfred Hitchcock), and curling up on the couch with a good book.   She was a generous and welcoming hostess whose home was often filled with visitors.

Robert R. Morris — ad man, kitchen designer, artist, and a renowned wit — died suddenly at his home in South Norwalk on Wednesday, Oct. 18, 2017. Born July 20, 1930 in Cleveland, Ohio, Morris was the eldest son of Robert E. Morris, a Kentucky farm boy who became a fashion buyer at New York department stores, and Marjorie Dickie Morris, an artist and member of Portraits, Inc. in New York, as well as the Silvermine Guild of Artists in New Canaan. Rob spent his childhood in Harrison, N.Y. As a boy, he longed to be an Indian warrior, and, after making his own flaming arrows, once set the family’s grape arbor on fire during target practice. He graduated from Harrison High School and went on to Dartmouth College, class of 1952, where he majored in philosophy and English.
