Ann H. Dana, 80, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 9, in Highland Park, Illinois, where she had recently moved to be close to family. She was born in Hollywood, California to Ernest and Florence Harper on Nov. 19, 1938. Ann grew up in Darien and married Charles H. Dana on Nov. 25, 1960.
Clarence Eugene Anderson, 80, died on June 28, 2019, at his home in Beverly Hills, California. Gene was born in Pampa, Texas on Aug. 31, 1938. He was a global resident of Houston; London; Darien; Theoule-sur-Mer, France; Hauraki, New Zealand and recently, Beverly Hills. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in chemical engineering from the University of Texas at Austin and his MBA from Harvard University, 1963.
Barbara May Hokanson Aymar, 93, a former Darien resident, passed away on June 28, 2019. She was born June 27, 1926 in Everett, Washington, the youngest of 11 siblings (including her identical twin sister Patricia). Her parents, Erik and Bina Hokanson, were Swedish immigrants who arrived in the United States at the turn of the 20th century. Barbara went to Queen Anne High School and the University of Washington, where she studied art and design. She and her sister were best friends and moved to San Francisco together after college, where she enjoyed a career as a successful executive assistant.
Joan Halloran Corning, a longtime former resident of Darien, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 28, 2019 in Rhode Island, where she had been living since 2014. Born Nov. 6, 1931 in Stamford, she was the daughter of John J. and Mary Duggan Halloran, and the wife of Edward P. (Bud) Corning, Jr.
She grew up in Stamford, went to Classical High School in Worcester, Massachusetts and graduated from Wheelock College in Boston with a B.S. in early childhood education in 1953. She taught second grade in Evanston, Illinois and at the Newfield School in Stamford. Joan and Bud were married in 1956 at St.
Barbara Ann (Jerabek) Martin, 80, a resident of Pelican Bay in Naples, Florida passed on June 19 at Lee Memorial Hospital in Ft. Myers, Florida. She was the daughter of the late John Charles Jerabek and Elizabeth Bestercy. Barbara grew up in Stamford, where she attended Sacred Heart Academy. She then graduated Paeir School of Art in New Haven, studying interior design. She was recognized by the school’s president for her outstanding talent.
Steven Tarnowsky a longtime resident of Darien and Norwalk, passed away on Wednesday, June 26 in Darien. He was 67. Born on Sept. 14, 1951 in New York City, he was the son of the late Joseph and Julia Hajdamacha Tarnowsky. Steven graduated from Darien High School, class of 1970.
Ellen Fleming (Lynch) Lapinski of West Barnstable, Massachusetts died peacefully on June 24, 2019, at the age of 85. Born June 19, 1934 to Albert F. and Margaret Lynch, Ellen was predeceased by her husband, Dr. Ronald L. Lapinski, and her brother, Albert F. Lynch Jr.
Formerly a resident of West Barnstable, Darien and Palmer Township, Pennsylvania, she graduated from Natick High School, Natick, Massachusetts in 1952, and the Katharine Gibbs School in 1953. During the Korean War, Ellen was employed by the U.S. Army Soldier Systems Center in Natick, where she met her beloved husband of 58 years. Ellen’s contribution to the U.S. Army was choosing the color “Army Green Shade 44” for the military in 1954. The U.S. Army, fortunately, never knew she was color-blind.
John Felton Ashton, 89, of Darien, died June 20 in his home surrounded by his loving family. Mr. Ashton was born in Bronxville, New York and for most of his adult life lived in Darien and Westport. He was the son of the late Henry Rusling Ashton and Ruth Felton, residents of Bronxville for more than 40 years. Mr. Ashton attended the Harvey School in Hawthorne, New York and in 1947 graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy in Exeter, New Hampshire. He received an A.B. degree in physics from Harvard College in 1951 and a J.D. degree from Yale Law School in 1954.
Richard W. Constable, known to his many friends as Dick, died peacefully on June 15 at the age of 92. Born July 3, 1926 in New York City, he loved riding his bike out to then-rural Long Island, listening to Jack Benny on the radio, and visiting the 1939 World‘s Fair in nearby Flushing Meadows. In June 1943, Mr. Constable attended Williams College, interrupting his studies a year later to join the U.S. Army during World War II. He served in Germany as a sergeant in the Military Police Platoon of the 70th Infantry Division. At the war’s end, he returned to Williams, graduating in 1948 with a B.A. in Geology.
Sallye J. M. Hutman-Howard passed away on April 19, 2019 surrounded by her family in Longmont, Colorado. Born Nov. 24, 1941 in Baltimore, Sallye Jane Mickle was the daughter of Abner Mickle and Kathleen Hinson. She grew up living in two worlds: on her parents’ dairy farm in Havre de Grace, Maryland, and with her aunt and uncle, Nancy and Robert Greene, in Miami, Florida and Darien. Despite growing up in two very different worlds, Sallye maintained a loving and free spirit.
Ronald Charles William Ade, 93, passed away on June 2 in Cumming, Georgia. Ron, as he was called by family and friends, was born March 24, 1926 in Brooklyn, New York and was raised in the Chicago area. His father was Charles William Ade, his mother was Helen Meyer Ade, and his sister was Jeanne Lillian Ade. Ron led a full, productive life. He served as Quartermaster of a troop transport ship, the U.S.S. Admiral W. S. Sims, during World War II.
Helen McCord Frost Powell of Ridgefield passed away peacefully on June 7, at the age of 85. She was a former long-term resident of Darien and also lived in Stamford. Born on May 23, 1934 in Grosse Pointe, Michigan, Helen was a daughter of the late Harry Washington Frost Jr. and Helen Janet Chalmers Frost. She attended the Liggett School in Grosse Pointe, and spent many summers as a camp counselor in Rhinelander, Wisconsin. In her 20s, Helen lived and worked in New York City, where she resided in Gramercy Park.
John Anton Stuart, a former Noroton Fire Chief and previously a Glenbrook Fire Department captain, transitioned on June 14. He was 82. The Lord called on him to end his travels on this earth. He truly traveled to every corner of the earth and to numerous places more than once. He and his wife, Bertha, ventured to every continent and most of the countries of the world.
Gregory Baxter Siegner, 63, of Green Cove Springs, Florida and formerly of Mt. Airy, Maryland, passed away on May 11 at Acadia National Park, Maine. Greg was born Nov. 25, 1955 in Niagara Falls, New York. He was predeceased by his parents, Robert and Janet Baxter Siegner.
Emily Duffy, a longtime Darien resident, passed away on Thursday, June 13, 2019 after a battle with cancer. She was 81. Emily was a longtime volunteer for Boy Scout Troop 53 and the Pegasus Equestrian program. She was well known as the school secretary at Plumfield School from 1980 to 2000. She was also administrative assistant to Dr. Josephine Velazquez, DPM of Darien.
