Robert Lucas Fischer, 80, of McLean, Virginia and Nantucket passed away from complications of Parkinson’s disease on Sept. 26, 2022. The oldest of three sons, Lucas was born in Terre Haute, Indiana on Aug. 8, 1942 to Hans and Mary Kay (Brinkman) Fischer and subsequently raised in Darien. He attended MIT earning B.S. degrees in political science and government as well as aeronautics and astronautics.

Nancy Jane Hecker Steinegger, 89 years old, a resident of Stamford and formerly both Darien and Greenwich, passed away on Friday, Sept 16, 2022, with her loving family and family of caregivers by her side. Nancy was born April 19, 1933, in Stamford to the late Mable and William Hecker. She graduated from Stamford High School in 1951, and immediately began her 67-year marriage with her high school sweetheart, John Steinegger. By the age of 22, Nancy quickly learned how to keep herself, her husband, and their three children happy and thriving. Volunteering as a Cub Scout den mother, PTA president, homeroom mother, and church lay teacher were critically important roles that made Nancy the best mother she could possibly be.

Robert E. McGill III, 91, passed away peacefully in the early hours of Sept. 22 at his home in Essex. The cause of death was congestive heart failure. Known as Bob and also “Tiger” to his many friends and colleagues, he was a graduate of Williams College (1954) and the Harvard Business School (1956). Born in San Francisco in 1931, his family relocated to Cincinnati in 1941, where he graduated from Walnut Hills High School in 1949.

Kenneth Neal Kermes, age 87, of South Kingstown, Rhode Island, died peacefully on Sept 7, while at HopeHealth Hulitar Hospice Center. Ken’s favorite words to say were “thank you” and “I appreciate it” and in typical fashion those were his parting words to his family and nurses at the time of his death. Born May 21, 1935, in Lafayette, Indiana, Ken was on the move living in numerous places before settling down with his family in Darien. After graduating in 1953 from Darien High School, Ken left for Amherst College where he played football and was an accomplished track and field star along with being a class leader. Immediately following graduation Ken enlisted in the Navy and attended flight training school in Pensacola, Florida to learn the “art” of take-offs and landings.

Arthur James Allen was born to Barton and Marilyn Allen in Flushing, New York on Sept. 14, 1976, and grew up with his sister Jennifer (Allen) Paterson and brother Bart Allen in Northport, New York. As a child he loved to ride his red fire engine way too fast down an incredibly steep hill, shoot baskets at his neighbor Curt’s house and read books on long days of sailing in the summer. He graduated from Northport High School in 1994 and was a varsity basketball player and varsity lacrosse player. During his senior year of high school he received all-league and all Suffolk County recognition for his skill.

Richard (“Dick”) Wayne Ettinger Sr., 89, formerly of New Canaan, passed away the evening of Sept. 9, in Tequesta Florida. Richard was born on June 28, 1933, and grew up in Schenectady, New York, and graduated from Mount Pleasant High. School in 1952. He worked for the General Electric Company, where he met his life love, Joan Audrey Korniak.

On Sept. 8, 2022, Russell “Russ” Harding, former astronomer, astronomy educator, teacher trainer, entrepreneur, philanthropist, dedicated volunteer, avid skier, patron of the arts, world traveler, and beloved friend to many, died at Glen Hill Center in Danbury after a prolonged illness. He was 90. Often referring to himself as a misguided missile, Russ had a whimsical approach to life which brought much joy to those around him. Children especially loved his unusual taste in gifts for all occasions which were always fun and never practical.

A happy outlook, a loving wife, a good night’s sleep and a little Scotch. Those were the key ingredients to a long life according to Fred I. Smith who passed-away peacefully at the home he shared with his wife Marny in Easthampton, Massachusetts, on Aug. 22. Fred Inman Smith III was 98 years old and had lived an amazingly full and happy life. He was a resident of Darien and Norwalk for over 50 years, where he was an active member of the Darien Senior Men’s Club and the Silvermine Golf Club, a volunteer at Person to Person and SCORE, and a cherished member of every community he lived in from Tokeneke to Rowayton.
