Death notices for Darienites, immediate relatives and others of interest to town residents

“There are some who bring a light so great to the world that even after they have gone the light remains.” Anthony James Cruickshank, affectionately known as Tony C and Papa, left this world on Sept. 6, but his brilliant light continues to shine on all he loved. Born to Robert and Lois Cruickshank, he spent the first four years of his life in India, where his father had been sent to manage the Port of Bombay. Upon returning to the U.S. his family settled in Bronxville, New York but spent many weekends and summers visiting Big Indian, New York. It was there he developed his love for fly fishing, arm wrestling and pranks on tourists, often accompanied by his younger brother and partner in crime, Rob.

Carl Asa Russell Jr., 83, died peacefully at home of complications from cancer on Oct. 3 in Cumberland Foreside, Maine. He was born on Aug. 18, 1936, the son of Carl Asa Russell and Ruth Merrill Russell. He attended Falmouth High School where he met the only love of his life, Margaret “Greta” Street.

Ann Keller Towne, 99, passed peacefully at home on Oct, 1. She was the wife of the late Robert Dickinson Towne. Ann was born in Minneapolis on Aug. 15, 1920, daughter of the late Raymond Franklin and Dorothy Britt Keller. She was a resident of the Darien, Stamford and the area for over 80 years.

John (Jack) Droney of Darien passed away peacefully on Saturday, Sept. 28. He was 94. Jack was born April 29, 1925 to John and Kate (Howley) Droney in Bellharbour, County Clare, Ireland. He was the youngest of four children, who also included Mary (Sisty Scarsbrook), Michael and Martin. Jack immigrated to the United Ståtes in 1947 with his cousin and lifelong friend, James (Gus) Droney. He arrived in New York, but soon ventured to Stamford to work as a carpenter/handyman for his uncle, Tom Howard, while attending night school at Wright Tech to hone his carpentry and maintenance talents.

George J. Walsh, who was among the last surviving U.S. Navy dive bomber pilots from World War II and an advertising executive during Madison Avenue’s go-go years in the ‘60s and ‘70s, died peacefully at home on Sept. 26. He was 98. Born in Brooklyn, New York on April 18, 1921, he was the son of George J. Walsh, a contractor and dock builder. His mother was the former Lillian O’Brien.

Albert J. Cass Jr., formerly of Darien and Fairfield, died peacefully on Sept. 3 in Warren, New Jersey. He was 91. Al was son of the late Albert and Ruth Cass of Boston, and a graduate of Boston College, Class of 1949. He served as a U.S. Marine Corps drill instructor and then went on to have a career in the paper business, starting out as a salesman, then became president of various paper companies until his retirement.

Louise Gockley, 94, a former longtime resident of Darien, passed away peacefully on Friday, Sept. 20. She was a resident at Heritage Village in Southbury since 1998 before moving to Pomperaug Woods in 2012. Louise was born in Boston on July 13, 1925 and was the daughter of Peter and Elidia Mazzola. Louise was raised in Quincy, Massachusetts and received her associates degree from Boston University.

Carol Whitney Harrington, 89, of Boca Grande, Florida and Manchester Village, Vermont, passed away peacefully on Sept. 18, surrounded by her adoring family. The cause of death was congestive heart failure. Mrs. Harrington, known to all as Whit, was born March 10, 1930 in Binghamton, New York to William and Helene Whitney. She moved to New Jersey at a young age graduating from Columbia High School in Maplewood, New Jersey in 1948.

Byron Jack Dugdale, age 94, died peacefully at his home in Darien on Sept. 21. He was born in Stamford and lived in Noroton Heights, as did his father, Jack and grandfather, William. He graduated from Darien High School, Class of 1944. He joined the Navy during World War II, serving onboard the troop carrier, USS General W.A. Mann, and working as a radio operator on Kodiak Island, Alaska.

Carroll Graham “Gray” Mead, 95, of Williamsville, Vermont, passed away peacefully at the Vernon Green on Saturday, Sept. 14. He was born on Christmas Day in 1923, to Howard and Rose Mead of Darien. He was their little Christmas Carroll. When Carroll became a teenager, he decided it would be easier to go by Graham.

Josephine S. Keane, a life-long resident of Darien, passed away peacefully on Monday, Sept. 23. She was 87. Born on Sept. 2, 1932 in Darien, she was the daughter of the late Samuel Joseph Saverine, Sr. and Susie Vitti Saverine.

Jeanne McLaughlin passed peacefully in her sleep on Aug. 16 in Palm Desert, Arizona. She was 98. She was born Oct. 23, 1920 in Pittsfield, Massachusetts and grew up in Bridgeport.

Harriett Bell Corrigan passed away Aug. 28, 2019, at Sunnyside Manor in Sarasota, Florida one day after her 92nd birthday. She and her husband William (Bill) Thomas Corrigan moved to Sunnyside from Venice, Florida in 2006. He passed away in 2009. Harriett was born Aug.

John McIntire Geddes, 66, of New York City and Cranford New Jersey passed from this life on Sept. 13, 2019. John was born in Queens and grew up in Darien. After a 33-year career in advertising at The New York Times, he retired to enjoy his life’s passions; golf, traveling, theater, movies, and jazz. He is survived by his loving wife, Susan; his devoted sister, Barbara Loh and her husband, Wallace Loh; his sister-in-law Irene Reumann; his mother-in-law, Gerda Schultz; as well as a niece and nephew.

Hunter Yager, a resident of Equinox Village in Manchester Center, Vermont, died on Thursday, Sept. 5, 2019 following a long illness. He was born in Brooklyn, New York on Sept. 29, 1929 and was the son of the late Jules and Lucille Yager. Upon graduating from Erasmus Hall High School and NYU, he earned his MBA from Harvard Business School.
