Being a train conductor seems like a simple, boring job: collecting tickets, opening and closing doors, reminding people to keep their feet off the seats. Yawn.
But there’s a lighter side to the job, as I wrote a few years ago, based on former conductor Michael Shaw’s great book, “My Rail Life” after he retired from a 36 year career on the New Haven line. He clearly loved his job. And he swears these stories are true.

Sharon Joy Workman died peacefully on Nov. 8 at her residence at the Edgehill Retirement Community in Stamford surrounded by her children. She was 91.
Seven victims reported the theft of checks mailed from mailboxes in Darien, including mailboxes outside the Post Office — and in one case, a paycheck that was mailed to a town resident — the victims told police on Nov. 2, 3, 6, 9, 10 and 11.
Recent reports around town of stolen mail involving checks being cashed has caused the Darien Police Department to recommend avoiding use of home mailboxes for outgoing bills.
Although mail theft has even occurred when checks were mailed from the mailboxes outside the Darien Post Office, police are still recommending that outdoor, blue U.S. Postal Service mailboxes can be used.

Robert “Robb” Kevin Peglar, one of the world’s greatest optimists who worked as hard as he played, especially on the golf course, died on Oct. 11. He had battled cancer for seven months.
A 72-year-old Darien man was arrested after he swung at someone else in a domestic incident, police said, adding that the victim was able to block the blow.
The man also tried to stop the victim from calling police, the police announcement said.
Betty B. Torpey, a resident of Stamford since 1976 and of Darien for 40 years prior, passed away on Nov. 10. She was 87.
The distinctive, peach-colored downtown retail/residential building at 879-889 Boston Post Road has been sold, the broker announced.
A Joseph Street man told police that on Veterans Day, after he left his home by someone claiming to want to buy sneakers, then someone broke in and stole his entire sneaker collection, valued at $3,800.

Arlene Roberta Dunn passed away peacefully on Oct. 22, 2021, at Providence Mission Hospital, Mission Viejo, California, surrounded by her loving husband, Thomas J. Dunn, her son, Brian T. Dunn and his love, Ambrea Tafoya, as well as her Pastor, Jim Szeyller of Laguna Niguel Presbyterian Church. She was 76.
