Lida A. Martinez of Olmstead Place came to police headquarters at about 9 p.m. on July 9 to discuss the theft.
Martinez told officers that she’d taken the purse with the intention of returning it to the rightful owner. Afterwards, the owner was found, and it was determined that cash was missing from the purse.
Police charged Martinez with sixth-degree larceny.
The theft occurred Friday afternoon and was caught on surveillance video. In the video, Martinez can be seen looking around inside the Baskin-Robbins as though to determine whether there were cameras, before deftly lifting the strapped purse and dropping it into her own bag.
Police released Martinez after she promised to appear July 23 in state Superior Court in Norwalk.
