A dog being walked on Brookside Avenue near Old Kings Highway North was attacked Sunday by an Akita after a girl walking that dog dropped its leash, police said.

Police gave this account (including accusations not proven in court):

Sometime before 3:30 p.m., the bitten dog, a mixed-breed cattle dog, was being walked by a 44-year-old woman, who passed by two girls walking a white and brown Akita dog. The woman heard one of the girls yell, so she turned around to see the Akita running toward her and her dog.

The Akita bit her dog on the hind legs and on the neck before the two girls took control of the attacker. The owner of the bitten dog took it to a veterinarian in Norwalk, who treated her pet for numerous puncture wounds. The owner had no bites or injuries.

The dog owner said she’s seen the Akita before and believes it belongs to a local resident. She didn’t get the names of that dog or the two girls walking it. Police referred the matter to the police animal control officer for further investigation.
