Patricia Phelps Lyman, a resident of Darien for 93 years, passed away peacefully at home on Jan. 15, 2023. Pat was the daughter of Gladys and Norman Lyman, and the granddaughter of Thomas J. and May W. McCarty. Her grandfather was a vice president and board member of the Tokeneke Club in 1928, and could trace his American ancestry back to 1740. Pat attended Hindley School, and Darien High School, which was located in the current Town Hall.

Matthew During, MD-PhD, a pioneering neuroscientist who devoted his life to developing gene therapy for human applications, passed away on Jan. 26. He was 66. Matt was born in New Zealand into a family of determined and independent individuals, including his mother, Dr. Zoe Petronella During, a ground-breaking physician, and his father, Peter Cornelius During, one of New Zealand’s leading soil scientists. Throughout his life, Matt attracted an exceptional range of colleagues, collaborators, and friends around the world.

Julie was a born leader, a natural negotiator, a fierce partner with any racquet, a gifted seamstress and a very trusted friend. She had no limits to what she could accomplish and she had a natural ability to do it all with compassion, style and that oh so beautiful smile.

Bill was born on May 12, 1930, in New York City to the late William Bellis and Anne Gallagher Bellis. His parents were immigrants from Liverpool, England and Donegal, Ireland respectively.

Born April 2, 1938 in Brooklyn, New York, she was the daughter of the late Richard and Genevieve Exner.  She was married to the late Joseph A. Dwyer. A long-time resident of Wilton, Marge spent many years working in the Darien Town Hall, in the office of the first selectman. Among many of her interests, she took the most joy in cooking for family and friends.

Kenneth Coventry, 97, passed away peacefully at his Darien home on Thursday Dec. 1. Born in Melbourne Australia, the first in his family to achieve an advanced degree, he earned his chemical engineering degree at Melbourne University and later obtained an MBA from Indiana University. During his career with Mobil Oil, he lived in Tasmania and Melbourne as well as Connecticut, New York and London. He traveled extensively to Europe and Japan on business trips during his 38 years with Mobil.

Patricia Caughey Coker, wife of William Thomas Coker, died peacefully at home on Hilton Head Island at the age of 80 years old. Pat was born Oct. 8, 1942, in Washington, D.C.  She is predeceased by her parents, Major General and Mrs. John Hart Caughey, and her son, Brendt DeWitt Coker. She grew up in various cities in the world due to her father’s rising military career.  She graduated from Washington and Lee High school in Arlington, Virginia, and graduated from Florida Southern University in Lakeland, Florida. While in college, the always venturesome Pat twice jumped out of an airplane while her dad was going through jump training as part of the leadership at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
