Saturday Recycling Tips: What You Can Do with Bags

You can recycle bags, and do that at the Darien Recycling Center, but for many bags there are even better options that the recycling center hopes you’ll choose. Here are two tips about bags from the Darien Recycling Center:

#1 — Avoid disposable bags

Single use plastic & paper bags are recyclable, but let’s face it: a lot of resources go into making, transporting & recycling them. 100 billion (yes — BILLION) plastic bags are consumed annually in the U.S., and many end up littering our landscapes, highways and waterways. A variety of reusable bags are available — most are inexpensive, durable and can be cleaned. Find ones you like and make a habit of using them!

After over 50 years of awarding summer learning grants to more than 500 Darien Public School teachers, the Reiss Fund, a community-based non-profit whose mission is to support Darien Public School teachers’ limitless quest for knowledge, has launched a new venture and is inviting the community to join in making it a success. On June 22, The Reiss Fund will host a one-day leadership conference open free of charge to all 435 Darien Public Schools teachers and administrators. The theme of the inaugural conference is leadership, and highlights include keynote speaker Taylor Mali, the four-time national slam poetry champion, former middle school teacher and renowned teacher-advocate, engaging and educational break out sessions and activities geared towards empowering teachers in the classroom, inspiring grade-level leadership and building mentors for student leaders. “The Reiss Fund has proudly supported teachers interested in expanding their horizons, deepening their knowledge and gaining experience that enriches their in-classroom instruction,” said Carolyn Langelier, Reiss Fund Board Member. “This one-day conference opens that opportunity to all of our teachers and administrators and creates a forum for collaboration and connection across the district to share insights, perspectives and experiences that can inform and heighten in-classroom learning.”

The Reiss Fund Teachers’ Conference is being generously underwritten in part by the seven Darien Public School PTOs.

Darien Moms Speak Out to Help Fight Lyme Disease

Two Darien women know all too well that each of us is just one tick bite away from being profoundly affected by Lyme disease. Tara Vessels and Robyn Carpenter have both had their lives upended by the tick-borne illness. Vessels put her fashion business on hold to care for her son when he went from “being a happy and energetic 12-year old to someone completely sidelined by this disease,” she said. ___________

— an announcement from Global Lyme Alliance

___________

“He was a great athlete and student, but for six years he’s been so ill that he’s been in and out of schools and forced to stop playing sports. He basically lost a lot of his childhood.”

Meanwhile, Carpenter, a homemaker, says she went from being “healthy and active my entire life” to being “affected so dramatically that I was paralyzed and couldn’t walk, couldn’t drive, couldn’t function the way I always had.”

She was initially misdiagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis and underwent five procedures to remove fluid from her knees, cortisone shots, high-dose steroids and surgery.

Less Driving, More Walking — Better Downtown Economies: Cameron on Transportation

Our love affair with the automobile depends on one thing: free parking. After driving on our “free” highways, we need to park somewhere, and we all hate to pay for the privilege. It’s as if there’s some constitutional right to free parking. But free parking is actually expensive and paid in more than just dollars. The industry standards-setting group known as the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) has defined 266 different types of businesses and determined the amount of nearby parking they require.

Police Chief Ray Osborne’s Speech at His Swearing-In Ceremony Wednesday at Darien Town Hall

Darien’s new police chief, Ray Osborne, gave these comments Wednesday after he was sworn in as the town’s 10th chief of police in Darien Town Hall:

[Darienite.com will publish a story about the event, but we wanted to publish the new chief’s comments sooner. A few short phrases were not picked up in the recording made by Darienite.com, but we believed we have all the important statements. The event was recorded by Darien TV79, which likely has all the words.]

Before making a few comments, I would just like to take the opportunity to thank a few people. First, I would like to thank the Darien Police Commission for the confidence they have shown in me fort appointing me to be chief of the Darien Police Department. The chief’s office comes with some awesome responsibilities, and thank you for the faith that you’ve shown me. […]

Secondly, I would like to thank my good friend, Duane Lovello.
