In celebration of Earth Day and Darien’s successful food scrap recycling program, residents are invited to pick up a bucket or two of nutrient-rich food scrap compost on Saturday, April 23, 2022, at the Darien Recycling Center, 126 Ledge Road, from 7 am – 2:45 pm. The compost will be next to the transfer station building, and volunteers will be available to help. — an announcement from the Darien Advisory Committee on Sustainability and the Darien Beautification Commission
Food scrap compost can be used in vegetable gardens, flower beds, or to enrich lawns in place of chemical fertilizers. Please limit container size to six gallons so that everyone has the opportunity to take some. Any leftover compost will be available for pick up the following Saturday, April 30.

Have Your Dump Permit? Fireworks Pass? Dog Registered? Beach Sticker? Where to Go, Online or in Town Hall

Now is the time of year when, with deadlines approaching, you need to get a bunch of permits from Town Hall (or, in many cases, online). Here’s what you need to know for the most widely used permits:
Note: Town Hall at 2 Renshaw Road is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. If you can do any of these online, we’ll provide a link below. Dump Permit

Finally getting around to replacing that old air conditioner? Refrigeration equipment (freezers, refrigerators, air conditioners, dehumidifiers) can be recycled at the Darien Recycling Center. A $15 Freon-recovery fee is required – pay cash or check to the scale house attendant or at the Department of Public Works (DPW) office at Town Hall. __________

Recycling isn’t just about getting rid of stuff in the right way. If you want to reduce your “ecological footprint,” you can also take and use something that would have been thrown away, and you can do some of that at the Darien Recycling Center. Here are two ways:
Compost: Yours for the taking
Ever wonder what this large mound of “earth” is as you enter the the Darien Recycling Center? It is leaf compost, and if you’ve never used it, now is the perfect time to mix it in the soil around existing plantings, or while installing new ones. Leaf compost improves the physical, chemical and biological properties of soil — overall, an excellent soil conditioner!

Here’s what you should know about recycling batteries at the Darien Recycling Center — any kind of batteries:
(And the amount of batteries already recycled there, just from July 1, 2015 to June 30, 2016 is pretty amazing.)
All types of batteries can be recycled at the Darien Recycling Center — no need to remember which ones can safely be disposed of with trash, which should be returned to retailers for recycling or which type should be saved for Household Hazardous Waste Day (HHWD). In FY-16, more than 5 tons of batteries were recycled through our facility! _____________
