Police: Elderly Woman’s Checks Forged, Arrest Expected

Five checks belonging to an elderly woman on Hale Lane were forged and cashed for a total of $450 — but there’s a suspect, and an arrest is expected, Darien police said. Police gave this account of the case:

A son of the 69-year-old woman checked his mother’s bank accounts and noticed irregularities, then went to police on Thursday, Jan. 19. The woman has a home health aide, and the son also contacted the healthcare agency that employs the aide. Police are continuing to investigate the matter and expect to get approval for an arrest warrant, with charges probably for first-degree forgery and second-degree larceny.

Jewelry Vaued at $27,000 Reported Missing from Wildcat Road Home

When workers from a construction company were left to work on renovating a Wildcat Road house, one of the homeowners packed jewelry she valued at $27,000 into a plastic box and on June 16 hid it among other items in a closet. Then she and other family members left the house for days, and when they returned on Monday, June 20, after work on a kitchen floor was finished, the box was gone. At first, she told police, she thought she might have misplaced the box, but after three weeks of looking, she couldn’t find it anywhere. She reported the matter to police on Monday, July 11. There was no evidence of forced entry into the home.

Homeowner Says She Left $500 Payment. Two Workers. Money Missing.

An Overbrook Lane resident said she put five $100 bills as payment for window washers under one of the worker’s orange juice bottles, and she had a friend with her when she put it there. Then she walked away. Then the money went missing. That’s what Darien police say they were told. Police gave this account of the matter:

Jewelry Stolen from Nickerson Lane Home

In one of two daytime burglaries reported to Darien police last week, various items of women’s jewelry were taken from a home on Nickerson Lane. The theft took place sometime between 10 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 12 (Columbus Day), and there was no forcible entry, so the house is believed to have been entered through an unlocked door. The last person to leave the home that day was gone by 10 a.m. The victim’s husband came back at 1:30 p.m. for about 30 minutes, but never went to the bedroom where the jewelry was stolen. Both husband and wife got back home at 5:30 p.m.

Various pieces of women’s jewelry and a jewelry box that had been sitting on the victim’s dresser are missing, although some pieces of jewelry were left behind.

Burglary Nets Thousands of Dollars’ Worth of Jewelry from Knollwood Ln Home

A woman living on Knollwood Lane returned home on Tuesday, Oct. 13, to find empty jewelry boxes strewn on bedroom floors and jewelry worth thousands of dollars now gone. The woman had left for work that morning at 5:30 and didn’t return until 5:35 p.m. and soon discovered the theft. Her husband, who works from home, was there for most of the day but he left between noon and 1:30 p.m. without locking the outside doors. He left again for a time after 4:45 p.m. and locked the doors but didn’t set the alarm.

Jewelry Valued at $40,000 Taken from Greenleaf Ave Home

An elderly Darien couple who left their doors unlocked (and at least one open) got back from a short trip to a store to find two teenagers running away from their house and jewelry valued at $40,000 missing from the master bedroom, police said. The couple, residents of Greenleaf Avenue, told police at 4 p.m. Saturday that they’d left the house at about 3:30 p.m. for a quick trip to a store. Not only were the doors to the house unlocked, the front door was left open and the screen door unlocked. When they got back, they saw two male teenagers running away from the house toward nearby Christie Hill Road. Nothing appeared to be out of place until they got to the master bedroom.

Copper Stolen from Storage Container at Home on Wakemore Street

Two rolls of copper were stolen from the storage container on the property of a Wakemore Street man sometime between Sept. 4 and 8 a.m. on Sept. 8, police were told. The 41-year-old victim told police that each roll of copper was valued at $800. One was a 100-foot roll of one-inch copper, the other was a 60-foot roll of 2 inch copper.

Speaker Stolen from Rental House on the Market

A $300 Bose SoundLink speaker was reported stolen Wednesday, Aug. 19, from a living room in a Hoyt Street house on the rental market, police said. The speaker, owned by a 24-year-old Darien man, had been left on a table next to a laptop computer, but although the speaker was taken, the laptop remained. Nothing else was reported missing. The rear door of the home was found to be open on Tuesday, Aug.

Wallet Reported Stolen from Goodwives River Rd Home

A woman told police that a wallet was taken from her purse sometime in the final days of July while she was at a home on Goodwives River Road. Then charges totaling $289.63  were made to her debit card, the woman told police. The wallet contained her driver’s license, the debit card, gift cards and her checkbook. She last opened her wallet to write a check on Wednesday, July 29 at 4 p.m. She reported the wallet stolen at 8 a.m. on Friday, July 31.
