It is with great sadness that the family of Judd Harris Alexander announces his passing on May 18 at the age of 93. Judd was born in Owatonna, Minnesota on March 23, 1925. He was the son of Mark and Veta (Harris) Alexander. He graduated from Pillsbury Military Academy in Owatonna before serving with the armored infantry in Europe during World War II where he was awarded a combat infantry badge, three battle stars, and a bronze star medal for valor. After the war, he graduated from Carleton College in 1949 with a degree in English literature.

Dr. Patricia Otis Cook, 74, of Darien, passed away peacefully on May 15, following complications of pancreatic cancer. Dr. Cook was an exceedingly well-regarded clinical psychologist and neuropsychologist who served the community over an astounding 43 years of practice at her offices in Darien and Bridgeport. She was a brilliant, loving mother and beloved grandmother. 

Patricia was born in Syracuse, N.Y. to Charles Robert Otis Jr. and Helen McNeill Otis. A star student, she was valedictorian of her high school and a dazzling pianist. She attended Radcliffe; graduating Magna Cum Laude in 1965 with a B.A. in social relations, then in 1967 received her M.Ed.

Helen McAloon Pierce, 89, formerly of Darien and Stamford, passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 22, 2018. Born in Bo’ness, Scotland on Dec. 18, 1928 to the late Patrick and Elizabeth McCallum McAloon, she was married for 56 years to William K. Pierce Jr., who predeceased her in 2015. In her 20s, Helen worked in the hospitality industry in Edinburgh, Scotland and London before immigrating to the United States as a governess for a family in Greenwich. As a superb self-taught cook and expert in fine dining, Helen then held a long-time position with the CONDEC Corp.

It is with tremendous sadness that we inform you of the passing of Louis F. Buccieri of New Canaan from complications associated with heart failure and lung cancer. Born May 29, 1938 in Greenwich, Louis was raised in Darien and spent most of his adult life in Stamford, where he raised his children. Dearly loved by his family and friends, Lou was a loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle and very well respected in the Stamford business community. Unofficially dubbed by many the “Mayor of Stamford’s Eastside,” there was never a face Lou didn’t seem to know and warmly greet. Generous to all with his wisdom, time and resources he was always tenderhearted to those most in need.

George A. Swisshelm, a longtime resident of Darien, passed away on Thursday April 26 in Branford. He was 94. He was born on Jan. 6, 1924 in Baltimore to the late Emmet Swisshelm and Beatrice Johnston Swisshelm. George graduated from William C Bryant High School in Long Island City. He was in the U.S. Army during World War II and then received a bachelor’s degree from Columbia College in 1948.

Anthony (Tony) Joseph Verrico Sr., 74, of Stamford, Darien, Wilton, and North Carolina, passed away peacefully on Friday, April 20,at Wilton Meadows Convalescent Home in Wilton. He served his country as a member of the United States Navy and was a retired U.S. Postal worker. He had many interests, from building and flying model planes, to working on engines of all sizes. He was a car buff, enjoyed music from the Doo-wop era especially those “Oldies but Goodies,” and don’t forget Country Music! Tony loved fishing, boating, traveling, and cooking.

Joseph G. Augustus, a lifelong resident of Darien, passed away on Sunday, April 29, 2018 at his home. He was 91. Born Jan. 9, 1927 in Darien, he was the son of the late George Agosto and Josephine Calvi Agosto Verducci. Mr. Augustus attended Darien Public Schools and was a star athlete while at Darien High. He participated in the Accelerated Graduation Program and was drafted into the U.S. Army near the end of World War II.

The family of Charles Miner Jr. announces the loss of their beloved father on March 19 in Vero Beach, Fla. Charlie, or Chas, was born Dec. 13, 1921 in New York City. He was 96 years young, and peacefully passed away at home with his children at his side. He is survived by his three children: Charmaine Caldwell, Mary M. Rude-Bell, and Charles Miner III, MD: six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
