Anna Margaret Gledhill, educator and veteran, died peacefully at home in Hallowell, Maine, on Monday, April 30. She was 99.

Anna Gledhill died on April 30, seven days before her 100th birthday. Her funeral is scheduled for May 13.

Anna Margaret Fiddler was born May 7, 1918 in New Brighton, PA. She grew up there as well as Stamford. She also spent time in Havana, San Juan, Puerto Rico, and New York City.

A graduate of Low-Heywood School in Stamford and Wellesley College, Anna Margaret served as an officer in the U.S. Navy WAVES in Washington, DC during World War II.

After the war, she returned to Stamford where she married Gilbert Gledhill in 1951. The couple settled in Darien and raised a family here.

Mrs. Gledhill was a lifelong student and teacher of early childhood education. She earned a master’s degree in religious education from Union Theological Seminary and a master’s degree in early childhood education from Bank Street College, both in New York City.

Through the years she led and taught at several nursery schools and pre-kindergartens in Greenwich, Stamford and Noroton.

In 1980, Mr. and Mrs. Gledhill moved to Green Pond in Saranac Lake, NY, where they spent almost 20 years of semi-retirement. From there they moved to Augusta, Maine. After Mr. Gledhill’s death in 2006, Mrs. Gledhill moved to Hallowell.

She is survived by her children: Philip Gledhill of Little Silver, NJ, Charles Gledhill of Durham, NC, Mary Gledhill of Lockwood, NY and Anna Christine (Christy) Crocker of Hallowell; and seven grandchildren.

A service of remembrance and committal will be held on Sunday, May 13, at 3 p.m. at the Gledhill/Crocker home, 31 Summer St., Hallowell. Family, friends, and neighbors are invited to come for the service and the open house to follow. Burial will follow on Monday, May 14, at Swan Point Cemetery in Providence, RI.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mrs. Gledhill’s name to a charity of your choosing
