George A. Swisshelm, a longtime resident of Darien, passed away on Thursday April 26 in Branford. He was 94.

George Swisshelm, 94, passed away on April 26. His funeral was held Thursday, May 3.

He was born on Jan. 6, 1924 in Baltimore to the late Emmet Swisshelm and Beatrice Johnston Swisshelm.

George graduated from William C Bryant High School in Long Island City. He was in the U.S. Army during World War II and then received a bachelor’s degree from Columbia College in 1948.

He married Anne Puzak, and they moved to Darien in 1958. George was an associate editor at NBC. While working at NBC, George was among 35 employees that were members of the NBC-sponsored U.S. Army Reserve unit that in 1951 was activated to report for active military service during the Korean War.

He worked in media publishing for many years, most notably as associate editor of Television/Radio Age magazine and Variety. George was a member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Darien and a very active member of the Darien Senior Center.

George was pre-deceased by his wife, Anne, in 2008; his daughter, Betsey; and two sons, Craig and Mark.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, May 3, 2018 in St. Luke’s Chapel, 1864 Post Road, Darien. Burial will follow at Spring Grove Cemetery in Darien with full military honors.
