Edward Francis Duffy, a longtime Darien resident, passed away at his home on Friday, April 6 after a long battle with nasopharyngeal cancer. He was 81.

Edward Duffy, 81, passed away on April 6. His funeral will be held May 19.

Ed was born as a first generation American on Sept. 16, 1936 in Brooklyn, NY. His parents were Edward McPartland Duffy, a native of Scotland, and Anna Flynn, a native of Ireland.

Ed moved to Darien in 1942 and went to Royle School. He graduated from Darien High School as a member of the class of 1954 where he played varsity basketball.

In his youth, Ed worked in hardware at the Tool Box and Knobel Brothers before joining his uncles in their contracting business.

Ed attended the University of Connecticut before joining the U.S. Air Force in 1958. He served on active duty for two years and in the reserve forces for five years.

He married Emily Ruth Grant Duffy in 1962, and they had three boys, who also grew up in Darien and graduated from Darien High School. Ed formed Roth and Duffy contracting in 1970, a business which he ran until his retirement.

Ed loved fishing, golfing and taking driving trips all over New England with his family. Ed was a volunteer for the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts in support of his sons’ endeavors during the 1970s and ’80s.

Ed is survived by his loving wife Emily; his sons: Frederick S. Duffy (and his wife, Monique) of Mt. Kisco, NY; James E. Duffy (and his wife, Lisa) of Canton, GA and Mark E. Duffy of Darien. He is also survived by six grandchildren, one great grandchild and a multitude of siblings, cousins, nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 19, 2018 at the Edward Lawrence Funeral Home, 2119 Post Road, Darien. Burial will follow at Spring Grove Cemetery, Darien. In honor of Ed’s Scottish and Irish heritage, bagpipes will accompany.
