Vera M. Crawford, 92, a resident of North Andover, Massachusetts, and formerly Dorset, Vermont, passed away peacefully Wednesday, March 29 at The Meadows at Edgewood in North Andover. Born in New York City on Oct. 12, 1930, Vera was the daughter of the late Robert and Veronica Martin of Greenwich. Vera graduated from Rosemary Hall in Greenwich and Wheaton College in Norton, Massachusetts. She worked in New York City for a publishing company before marrying Warren Wentworth Crawford in 1956.

It is with great sadness that we announce Robert Daniel Labella, 60, of Stamford, passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, March 25. Robert was born on July 16, 1962, and attended Stamford High School. He went on to become a machinist at Pitney Bowes before discovering his true passion of refereeing and umpiring throughout Fairfield County. He was very involved in coaching a variety of sports in Darien, especially Darien Little League. Robert was truly a larger-than-life figure, and loved by all who knew him.

Patricia (Pat) Smyth, 82, passed away peacefully on March 16 in Lakewood Ranch, Florida with her children by her side. Pat was born on June 2, 1940, in Stamford, the daughter of Ann and Stanley Hojnacki. She was a Stamford High School and UConn graduate, where she was a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. She was on the faculty of the Holmes School in Darien, spent many years as a substitute teacher and as a local real estate agent in Stamford. Pat loved her family a great deal and was very active in all their lives and activities.

Sheila Warfield Johnson died on March 9, 2023 at home in Stamford after a long battle with ovarian cancer. She was 79. She was born Dec. 2, 1943 in New York City to Eleanor and Collister Johnson, and attended Ms. Porter’s School and Smith College. She majored in French literature, studying abroad her junior year at the Sorbonne in Paris, and was a member of the Octavians singing group.

Marion (Marty) Moore Gilbert passed away peacefully on Monday March 6, 2023 in her home in Darien. She was 89. Marty is remembered for her boundless joy, expansive spirit and unconditional love for all she encountered. Born on April 3, 1933 in San Mateo, California, Marty’s parents were Jane Foster Moore and Edward Small Moore Jr. Marty graduated from Smith College in 1955 where she was later honored as a remarkable alumnae in 1999. She earned a master’s degree in library science from Pratt Institute and served as an elementary school librarian at Tokeneke and Royle elementary schools for nearly two decades until 1989.

Edward Henry Krawiec of Darien passed away peacefully at Maplewood of Darien on March 7, 2023. Ed was the son of the late Bertha and John Krawiec. Graduating from New Britain High School in 1949, he was the co-captain and a starter for the 1949 State Championship basketball team and was voted MVP of the 1949 CIAC ‘All Tournament All Star team’ by Connecticut sportswriters. Ed served in the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1953, stationed in Germany. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Springfield College in 1958, followed by a master’s degree in 1961 and continued on to complete a 6th year degree in education.

Sally Shutts of Sarasota, Florida, formerly of Darien,  the only daughter of Harry and Ellen Armus, passed away March 6 after a long illness. She was 71. She passed while surrounded in love by those who survive her: her husband of 40 years, Albert “Sam” Shutts, and her son, Jason. A dedicated mother, much of her life was devoted to raising and caring for him. Active and ever present she was a den mom, a scout mom, and every other role an involved mother could fill.

Thomas Edward Gunn, 67 of Miromar Lakes, Florida and longtime resident of Darien,  passed away peacefully on March 3, 2023. He was born on Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14, 1956 on Fort Belvoir, Virginia, to Thomas and Patricia Gunn. Tom’s father worked in the steel industry, and after moving seven times before the age of 15, Tom moved to Darien and graduated from Darien High School in 1974. He was a resident of Darien for over 40 years and loved being part of the Darien community.
