Since June, there have been a higher than usual number of vehicles stolen in Darien — a total of 18 as of four days ago, Darien police announced. In response, police are suggesting various tips, at least one of which is probably new to you. Along with the car thefts, numerous vehicles have been entered, often with thefts of things inside, police said. (A long list of the incidents since July 25 is at the bottom of this article.)

In almost all cases, keys had been left inside the vehicle, police said, adding, “it is important to note” that stolen vehicles are often used in serious crimes in other cities and towns across the state. Obvious and Not-so-Obvious Tips for Protecting Your Property
Darien police recommend that drivers adopt these habits to foil car thieves:

Thieves, possibly different ones, entered two Audis the same night on different streets in Darien overnight Wednesday to Thursday, June 25 to 26. One on Deepwood Road was unlocked, apparently with the keys inside; thieves tried to steal another on Middlesex Road, but weren’t able to start the car, police were told. Police gave this further account:

The theft on Deepwood Road happened sometime overnight. The owner said a second set of keys may have been left in the Audi A5. Shortly after the car was reported stolen at 5:45 a.m., state police reported they’d found it eight miles away, left by the northbound lanes of Merritt Parkway, at Exit 39 just north of the Darien border.

Police confronted a man who was trying to open car doors in the Whole Foods parking lot late Monday afternoon and discovered that he and two others had stolen items from multiple vehicles in Darien, police said. Darien police gave this further account, including accusations not proven in court:

Police were dispatched to the parking lot at 150 Ledge Road at 4:28 p.m. after being told a male had gotten out of a black SUV and was trying to open vehicle doors in the lot. Officers found the man fitting the description of the suspect. The man, later identified as Andres Aldana, gave officers a false name, and he denied looking into or trying to open any vehicle doors. Officers also saw a black SUV fitting the description of a vehicle involved in the incident, driven by a woman who was later identified as Andrea Chirivi Sarmiento.

Three different residents reported to Darien police on the same day that their home surveillance cameras showed thieves trying the door handles of their cars, which were parked outside, overnight. But each of the three owners had done the one simple thing that caused the thieves to give up and leave. No cars entered, nothing stolen. They actually locked their doors. The three incidents happened overnight from Friday to Saturday, Feb.

Victim Sees Purse Stolen from Unlocked Vehicle in Open Garage

By David Gurliacci | February 1, 2024

Two individuals walked into an open garage at a home on Arrowhead Way on Friday, Jan. 26, then entered an unlocked vehicle and stole a purse left in it, the victim told police. Police said:

Officers went to the house on the private road at 2:11 p.m. that day and spoke with the victim, who told them she saw the two individuals enter the garage and take the purse (the police announcement didn’t describe the pair in any way, including whether either one was male or female, adult or child). The suspects ran toward the road after the victim yelled at them.
