“Chess is such a great game,” said Senior Programs Director Beth Paris. “It really gets you thinking about strategy and is a lot of fun! And playing in person is a great social opportunity — much more fun than playing online.”

The newly formed Chess Club joins such other Senior Center programs as Painting (acrylic, water color and oils), Knitting and Crocheting, Cribbage, Table Tennis, Mahjong, Woodworking and Stained Glass. The center also offers daily exercise classes at various levels as well as Ballet, Aerobics and Cardio Drumming.

Another new offering this fall is Beginner French, joining language classes in Spanish and conversational Italian.

Darien Senior Center has the players, the chess boards, the tables and chairs. Now it’s your move (white goes first).

“It’s so important that seniors keep their minds engaged and find something that stimulates them,” Paris said. “That’s why we also offer a variety of lectures by outside speakers.”

The Senior Center also hosts a fresh cooked meal each weekday at noon, prepared by Chef Judi. The cost is $5.

The Darien Senior Center is next to Town Hall (2 Renshaw Road) and is open to all Darien residents at no charge. Out-of-towners can also join for a small fee. Hours are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
