Social Worker Joins Community Fund’s Youth Asset Team

Licensed Clinical Social Worker Andrew Tepper has joined The Community Fund of Darien as an advisor to the organization’s Youth Asset Team. Tepper will help plan prevention-related events and speakers, as well as alcohol-alternative events for their peers. He’ll provide the teen perspective at Thriving Youth Task Force meetings, and mentor middle school Youth Give Back students. “We are so excited to welcome Andrew to the Youth Asset Team this year,” said Janet King, executive director of TCF. “He really connects with students thanks to his humor, compassion and contagious enthusiasm.”

The festive atmosphere featured over 50 clubs representing a wide array of interests including scholastics, community service, and social clubs, according to Andrea Cragin, one of the parents helping to organize the event. Torchiana, shatters the stigma surrounding mental health, by speaking at middle and high schools, conferences, and universities across the country about her experiences. Her speech brings to light the silent stigma of mental health and build awareness about the serious effects of bullying and her presentations help individuals who are currently struggling to know they are not alone.

The Darien Police Department, in cooperation with the Depot Youth Center, is starting it’s tenth year of the “Cops and Kids Adventures” program. The program runs from September to May, meeting once, sometimes twice a month. The group of officers and kids will participate in “fun adventures” together, as well as community service projects that they will execute. Examples of past projects include a supply drive for Darien Human Services Household Closet, providing free smoke and carbon-monoxide detectors for residents in need, and Help My Starving Children. This year’s outreach program will consist of collecting for Darien Human Services Closet.

During the transition from high school to college many students and parents are faced with tuition payments, financial aid and scholarship applications, and often have to purchase a new laptop or tablet. These are all things that could lead to being scammed if not careful. According to the BBB Institute for Marketplace Trust, consumers ages 18 to 24 are three times more likely than seniors to fall victim to a scam. According to 2018’s BBB’s ScamTracker Risk Report, 41.6% of students reported a loss when exposed to a scam as compared to 28.3% of non-students. With college students being the primary target for scams, Better Business Bureau Serving Connecticut (BBB) has some useful tips and warnings for college students and their families:

—Fake Credit Cards — It’s not a secret that deals which appear to be a quick and easy way to spend money are offered to college students to get them to apply for their first credit card.

Limited spots are still available for the next Stamford EMS Safe Sitter class on Wednesday, July 31. Pre-teens and teens will learn the skills needed to care for themselves and young children so they may become safe and effective babysitters. Taught by a Stamford EMS CPR instructor, this engaging and informative course is filled with fun games and role playing exercises. Participants should bring a sack lunch, and will receive a training manual as well as a course completion certificate. The class takes place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Stamford EMS, 684 Long Ridge Road in Stamford.

At the Darien YMCA competitive swimming teaches swim technique and conditioning, but swimmers learn lessons that extend far beyond the perimeter of the pool. — an announcement from the Darien YMCA

From 1909, when the Y began group swim lessons, to today’s Y National Competition, the pool has become a place where pride replaces fear; health and happiness accompany achievement. In addition to offering exercise, safety and skill development for a lifetime of aquatic enjoyment, the Darien YMCA Piranhas are being taught the meaning and joy of volunteerism. On June 13, Piranha Swimmers Khrystos Yika-Nacarino, Andrew Rodriguez, Pragun Sharma, Paula Frankowski, Sophia Karidas, Nolan Lovegrove, John Frankowski, Alex Khilko and Coach Henk Jansen, took some time out from practice to volunteer at Person-to-Person (P2P) in Darien. The kids and coach sifted through piles of clothes, sorted, folded and hung them in the P2P clothing pantry for two hours.

Kids from ages 10 to 15 with an interest in acting can join a weeklong, intensive class for film and television acting this August by Matt Newton of MN Acting Studio in Darien and talent agent Deb Chasen of Chasen Talent. — an announcement from MN Acting Studio
This one of a kind, challenging, weeklong on-camera workshop is limited to 10 trained, professional, hand selected young actors who want to work exclusively with  Newton (youth on set acting coach for “Jessica Jones,” “Blue Bloods,” “Orange is the New Black,” and “When They See Us”) on all aspects of TV and film in a small group setting. The class will cover everything from auditioning, to role prep, to working on set, improvisation, cold-reads, the casting process, and even writing and directing their own scenes. Actors will also film a professional scene (directed by Matt) with a small crew on location to be ultimately used for their demo reel/online casting profile. In addition, on the final day, Matt will in an industry guest to watch and critique scenes, and do a Q&A with parents.
