A new show by exhibiting members at the Rowayton Arts Center (RAC), “Abstraction,” will be on view Feb. 9 through March 7. — an announcement from Rowayton Arts Center
The opening reception is free and open to the public on Sunday, Feb. 9 from 4 to 6 p.m.
RAC gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday from 12 pm to 5 pm and Saturday from 10 am to 1 pm. The chair for the exhibition is Michael Brennecke and the co-chair is Heidi Follin.

The Rowayton Arts Center (RAC) will review artwork by local artists who wish to become exhibiting members. Artists should bring items for consideration to the gallery on Thursday, Jan. 23 from 12 noon to 5 p.m. The works will be reviewed the next day. — an announcement from Rowayton Arts Center

The artist selection will take place on Friday, January 24 with notifications sent to accepted artists. Artists should plan on picking up their artwork on Saturday, January 25 from 10 am to 1 pm.

RAC celebrates the study, creation and appreciation of the arts through classes, exhibitions and events open to all in the community. For almost 60 years, this nonprofit organization has been a cultural gem in Rowayton. The gallery and art school overlook the scenic Five Mile River at 145 Rowayton Ave.

Silvermine Arts Center will welcome more than 50 new members (including three from Darien) to its Guild of Artists in January 2020 with a New Members Exhibition presenting a broad spectrum of innovative work. Stop by the Maritime Garage Gallery’s winter exhibit in SoNo to experience a sense of calm during the busy holiday season. “Seeds of Peace” presents the works of 28 artists from around the region, including Mark Schiff of Norwalk; Jennifer Prat from Fairfield; Julie O’Connor, of Weston; and Shanan Haislip of Terryville. Nadia Martinez has curated the exhibit.

“Collecting Reimagined: A 2D Curiosity Cabinet” is curated by H.S. Miller of Darien, the museum’s Zvi Grunberg Resident Fellow 2019-20, and will be on view in the museum’s Bantle Lecture Gallery through March 24, 2020. Below, Miller answers five questions about the exhibition:

Spittoon Shards of History Exhibit Darien Historical Society

A spittoon, beer bottle and milk pan are part of a unique collection of Norwalk Pottery items featured in the exhibition “Shards of History” now at the Darien Historical Society. Richard Prowse, a longtime collector of Norwalk Pottery, will discuss the display and answer questions on Sunday, Nov. 17 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Darien Historical Society. The display features several stoneware and redware pieces manufactured in Norwalk during the 1800s, when that city was known throughout the United States for producing top-quality pottery. “Glazed pottery items were once as ubiquitous as Tupperware is today,” said Prowse, who with Tracy Goodnow, loaned the pieces to the Museum and co-curated the exhibition.

The Rowayton Arts Center (RAC) is seeking original, handcrafted works from artists for the annual Holiday Gift Show, running between Thanksgiving and Christmas 2019. — an announcement from Rowayton Arts Center

RAC will accept small ornaments and holiday-related items as well as jewelry, pottery and ceramics, candles, wooden toys and items, small furniture, knitted or crocheted items, fiber art, original cards and small prints or paintings. Receiving dates are Nov. 15 to 17, 2019. In order to participate, artists must sign up for a time to drop off their work.

A new show at the Rowayton Arts Center, with works by 83 area artists, will be on view Oct. 13 through Nov. 9, 2019.
The “Autumn Juried Show,” an all-media exhibition, features artwork by 83 artists from the area, chosen from over 350 submissions. The opening reception is free and open to the public from 4 to 6 p.m., this Sunday, Oct.

Linda McKie McClellan is a long time resident of Westport. Painting and drawing since childhood, Linda’s inspiration comes from nature. Flowers, trees, rocks and the sea shore influence her richly colored pieces. She is a painter, printmaker, collagist and experimenter with new mediums.
She is currently working with water based mediums, which include acrylic, watercolor, and water based oil paint.

Nobu Miki art Artists at Grove Street Plaza

The fifth annual Artists at Grove Street Plaza open-air art show will feature top local painters, photographers and ceramicists, with live chamber music and five food vendors as part of a Paris-style exhibit produced with Darien talent. The event takes place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday Sept. 21 (the rain date is the following Saturday, Sept. 28.)

Rowayton Art Center Receiving Art for Exhibit

The judge, Jon deMartin, is among the leading figurative artists working today and has taught life drawing and painting for more than twenty-years at the most prestigious academies and ateliers in the country.

Susan Kurnit works Atria Darien August 2019

Artist Susan Kurnit’s pet portraits, landscapes and still life paintings will be on display this month at the Gratia Gillespie Art Gallery at Atria Darien for the month of August. Here’s Kurnit’s description of her career and work:
I graduated college with a B.A. in cultural anthropology and my intent was to stay an additional semester and study art, but life threw me a curve. I was offered a fabulous job first as a magazine editor at Mademoiselle and then as Fashion Director of Seventeen Magazine for a total of 10 years.

Fairfield County native Peter Saverine will be the featured artist at Bistro du Soleil in Westport through Labor Day. An opening reception to meet the artist, preview and purchase paintings and celebrate over wine and tasty treats with the restaurant owners and local friends will be held from 4 to 7 p.m., Sunday, August 4. The event is open to the public. “Painting has become a rewarding and relaxing hobby that has also created opportunities for me to share with my neighbors to make a small impact on the community,” Saverine said. “I believe artwork should be affordable and will be showing a range of original work, large and small, from $20 to $450.”
