Paper 2019 — on view at Silvermine Galleries from April 3 to May 16 —features prints, drawings, photographs, artists’ books, and handmade paper as well as three-dimensional works made with paper. The public is invited to an opening reception on Sunday, April 7, from 2 to 4 p.m.

— an announcement from Silvermine Arts Center

“The aim of the exhibition is to highlight the vitality, diversity, sense of experimentation and skillful execution, and the many ways in which contemporary artists approach this material,” said the exhibit curator, Jennifer Farrell, who is also the associate curator of drawings and prints at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Finalists, all of whom are included in the exhibition, were chosen from over 400 submissions from almost every state in the U.S. The geographical spread gives the exhibition a national perspective. “Viewers will find a wide range of works made on or with paper, including sculpture and installations along with the traditional disciplines of drawing, painting, and photography,” said Silvermine Gallery Director Roger Mudre. “We’re delighted to introduce a new exhibition series with a national outlook and reach.”

Visitors to the Silvermine Galleries might be inspired to experience making art with paper themselves after seeing the different and intriguing ways contemporary artists are approaching this traditional material.

To the editor:

We are fortunate to have many individuals and local businesses that value the importance of arts in our community and that support the Darien Arts Center. The DAC, which is not subsidized by the town of Darien, solely depends on funding from its programs, donations, grants, and fundraising. Recently, the DAC has been extremely fortunate to gain a new friend in Caffè Nero, which generously hosted a fun, artistic evening of live music, delicious food and their famous coffee drinks to benefit the Arts Center. Meet artist Kevin Dailey at the Bemer pop-up shop in the Noroton Heights Shopping Center, where his abstract art and sailing photography are on display. You can also get free Bemer therapy sessions at the open house event from 6 to 8:30 p.m.

Also, very colorful abstracts that invite the eye to wonder in, and under, to find abstract forms, animals and beings, scenes. He began his art career with photography — taking pictures of sailboat races and doing multimedia presentations. While he still loves the sea, salt, and sails, his work has evolved into the morphing of something as simple as an antique car grill into large scale metal prints that move with light and color.
