Seven-Year Prison Sentence for John DiMenna, Formerly of Darien, for Fraud Scheme

John DiMenna, 75, until recently from Darien, was sentenced to seven years and one month in prison for defrauding investors of more than $64 million in frauds related to an “extensive real estate investment and financing scheme.” Many Darien residents invested in DiMenna’s companies and projects. “Through this scheme, victim investors lost approximately $28 million and victim lenders lost approximately $37 million, for a total combined loss of $64.7 million,” according to an announcement from the U.S. Attorney’s Office in New Haven. DiMenna was a Stamford developer who operated through various entities including Seaboard Realty LLC, Seaboard Stamford Investment Group (SSIG), and Seaboard Properties Group LLC. The prosecutor’s office said DiMenna accomplished his frauds in various ways from 2010 to 2016, by giving investors and prospective investors phony financial information.

Family Away, Real Estate Agents Take People Through Home, $11K Watch in Dresser Missing

A watch valued at $11,084 was reported missing from a dresser drawer in a home on Midbrook Lane. The victim and his family had been away for a weeklong trip recently while the home was for sale and potential buyers were shown through it, police were told. The family was away from March 14 to 20, but the victim didn’t notice the watch was missing — along with a second watch of negligible value — until just before notifying police on Thursday, April 5. There was no evidence of a burglary at the house. Both watches had been in the dresser drawer.

4 Unlocked Vehicles Recently Entered on 1 Night: 1 Debit Card + 1 Work ID Stolen

Sometime overnight from Wednesday to Thursday last week (April 4 to 5), at least four vehicles parked outside and left unlocked were entered, all in the Noroton section of town or just north of it, police said. Two of the vehicles were parked at homes on Fitch Avenue. The other two were on Outlook Drive and (in Noroton Heights) on Patton Drive. The first town resident to find a vehicle entered told police that a glove box was found open at 4:30 a.m.

From what was reported to police, apparently, the loot was pretty light, with only two items known to be missing and only from the first incident, below:
77 Fitch Ave. At 5:44 a.m., a man told police that the glove box of a blue 2016 Mazda CX had been found (at 4:30 a.m.) with its glove box open and its contents on the front passenger seat.

Oops: Woman Tells Police $12,000 in Cash Taken From Unlocked Car at Park

Darien police say a woman told them Wednesday not only that she had not locked her car when she parked at Stony Brook Park on Ledge Road, but that she’d left her purse in it — containing cash totaling $12,000. The purse and the money were gone when she got back to the car, she told police. Here’s how police described what she told them:

At about 4:30 p.m., she parked her blue 2015 Subaru XV in the small lot at the park, then left. When she got back to the car at about 5:40 p.m., her purse, left on the front passenger seat, was gone. Along with the money, there were several credit cards, also gone.

Darien police Lt. Jeremiah Marron Jr. recently took the “Command Training Series: Mid-Management Course,” a one-week training program for upper-level personnel. It was presented by the Justice System Training and Research Institute at Roger Williams University in Bristol, R.I., in partnership with the New England Association of Chiefs of Police. Coursework addressed contemporary concepts of management and leadership relevant to the responsibilities of first line supervisors in a modern police agency. The program, presented March 19 to 23, discussed topics including operational leadership and management principles, problem-solving, organizational and interpersonal communications, labor relations, disciplinary issues, and ethical decision-making.

Jacqueline Pace, 93, a Teenager in the French Resistance, Former Darien Resident

Jacqueline Henriette Pace, a former, long- time resident of Darien and once a member of the French Resistance, passed away peacefully after a long illness Saturday, March 24, at her apartment in Stamford. She was 93.

Born March 18, 1925 in Paris, Jacqueline Gambiez survived the Great Depression and World War II as part of the rightfully dubbed “Greatest Generation.”

Upon the Nazi invasion of France in 1940, Jacqueline left behind her Parisian childhood to hide in the Burgundy countryside in Chatillon-sur-Seine with her mother and grandmother. (Her grandfather, Henri Bertrand, who had passed before WWII, once owned a small cheese-making company near Chatillon, in Chamesson, and built a beautiful stone home there that remains today.)

____________

— an obituary from Edward Lawrence Funeral Home

____________

Two years later, at the age of 14, Jacqueline joined the Resistance delivering mail to the underground. While she assumed tremendous risk (that she said she never appreciated at the time), she proved very valuable as a translator since she spoke English, German, Russian, and of course, French. Among her notable wartime successes, Jacqueline helped save the life of American pilot, James MacGrew, who had been downed behind enemy lines in the forest near her home.

‘Pandas’ IMAX Movie Opens at Maritime Aquarium

Take a giant-screen journey to China to watch as a “bear whisperer” from New Hampshire helps a young panda learn to live in the wild in “Pandas,” a new IMAX movie opened Thursday, April 6 at The Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk. Filled with scenes of the adorable black-and-white baby bears, “Pandas” will play at noon and 2 and 4 p.m. daily in Connecticut’s largest IMAX theater, with a screen that’s six stories high. (Times will shift on June 30.)

— an announcement from the Maritime Aquarium

“Pandas” arrives with excellent pedigree, having been made by the same team that created “Born to Be Wild,” one of the most popular movies ever shown at The Maritime Aquarium. (The Aquarium is the fifth-highest-grossing theater in the world for “Born to Be Wild,” a 2011 release that follows efforts to rescue and reintroduce orphaned baby elephants and orangutans back into the wild.)

This new IMAX film travels to Chengdu Panda Base in China, where scientists breed adult giant pandas in order to introduce the cubs into the wild. Those and other efforts have stabilized the panda population, to the point that the International Union for Conservation of Nature changed its listing for giant pandas in 2016 from “Endangered” to “Vulnerable.”

However, the IUCN also notes:

“The optimism engendered by these positive trends is dampened by evidence indicating that some panda populations are decreasing, particularly those found in the smallest and most degraded habitat patches …”

Threats include climate change, habitat loss, population fragmentization, and human intrusion.
