Parents of Incoming DHS Students: You and Your Kid NEED to Attend This, Preferably Monday Night

All Darien High School students involved in any extracurricular activity and their parents are now required to attend one of the few scheduled school meetings about the dangers of substance abuse. And there’s one scheduled on Monday night especially for students about to complete Grade 8 and enter high school, along with one of their parents or guardians. The school district will have more of these meetings over the summer, but school officials say the one on Monday is expected to be the easiest one for parents and kids to attend, since it’s unlikely to interfere with summer activities. The “Commitment Workshop” meeting takes place from 7:15 to 9 p.m. on June 11 in the Darien High School Auditorium. At 6 p.m. the same night, Grade 8 students are invited to the high school Gym to learn about the athletic program.

What’s Happening at Stepping Stones Museum for Children in June

Stepping Stones Museum for Children LOVES Planet Earth and that love for “the third rock from the Sun” will be on display at the museum all spring and summer long with a daily series of play-based learning experiences that will educate and delight. Through August, the museum has been transformed into an immersive, engaging, hands-on exploration of Planet Earth. Each day offers a variety of imaginative STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math) gallery investigations, interactive stories, games or guides that celebrate our amazing planet from the inside out. In June, Stepping Stones offers an undersea odyssey as the museum embarks on a month-long investigation into the watery wonders of aquatic ecosystems.  This expedition takes you on an epic exploration of ecosystems as far away as the Great Barrier Reef or as close as the Long Island Sound watershed. As most of the Earth’s surface is covered in water, there are plenty of mind-boggling discoveries to be made about our oceans, rivers, lakes, ponds, streams and creatures that lurk in the deep!

A man who said he was hit in the back of his head while on a late night train was taken to Stamford Hospital last week, and a Fairfield man who said he hit him was arrested, Darien police said. A misdemeanor assault charge against the Fairfield man has been filed by MTA police because the incident occurred on a train. Darien police, who spoke to both men and then turned the matter over to MTA police, gave this account of what they were told, including accusations that have not been proven in court (additional information was given by the MTA, as noted below):

Darien police were called to Darien Railroad Station at 12:17 a.m., Wednesday, May 30. A man, who was not otherwise identified, told them that while he was on the train, he had been punched in the back of the head without any warning, and he didn’t know why that had happened. He was treated by Darien EMS-Post 53 at the scene, then taken to Stamford Hospital. The other man was later identified by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority as Charles Alesi, 39, of Fairfield (no street address given).

Police: Two iPhones Apparently Stolen While Being Shipped to Darien Customer

Two iPhones, valued at a total of $700, were reported stolen before the Darien man who bought them even got a chance to see them delivered, police said. Darien police gave this account of the incident:

A Brookside Drive man told police on May 30 that he had bought through the Internet two iPhone 7 models for $350 each. He was given a UPS tracking number. On May 29, he received a text message from UPS telling him that the phones had been delivered at 1:48 p.m., and at about 2:30 p.m., the man’s children arrived home and got all the mail from the mailbox. The package that was supposed to be holding the iPhones was there, but it appeared to have been tampered with — the packing tape had been cut, and only the bubble-wrap and charging cables were inside.

William “Bill” Brown Shepard, Jr., 71, of Darien and Naples, FL passed away suddenly on Tuesday, May 29 surrounded by his loved ones after complications from immunotherapy treatment for recently diagnosed metastatic melanoma. Bill was born in Summit, NJ to William and Mary Shepard. He graduated from The Pingry School and Wesleyan University, where he had a long high school and college swimming career. He passed on a deep love of competitive and recreational swimming to his children and grandchildren, and any Shepard family vacation always included being on the water. It was during college where he met his loving wife of 49 years, Midge, who came back the night they met and said to her friends “this is the first man I could consider marrying.”

After college they were married before Bill served a year in Vietnam as an officer stationed at a riverboat base.
