Graduation season can be a challenging time for thoughtful gift givers — how do you mark such an achievement with creativity and meaning?

Here’s one way: Consider sponsoring an animal at the Darien Nature Center in honor of your graduate.

Honorees receive a congratulatory email announcing your unique gift, mail updates about their adopted pet, are invited to schedule one-on-one playtime, and are recognized with signage in the Nature Center Zoo Room.

“It is a gift that shows social consciousness and celebrates the graduate’s love for the natural world,” said Nature Center Executive Director Leila Wetmore.

Alicia Lyon of Darien recently sponsored an animal in her son Peter’s name. Peter is graduating from the Rumsey Hall School in Washington, CT and starting at Millbrook School in Millbrook, NY this fall.

“We wanted to celebrate yet another milestone in Peter’s life in collaboration with an organization that means so much to us,” Lyon said. “So we thought it would be perfect to recognize Peter’s graduation with a half-year sponsorship and a new connection to Einstein, the lop-eared bunny!”

The Nature Center houses about 40 animals of more than 20 different species, and each animal costs about $900 a year to care for. There are five sponsorship levels available. All sponsorships are fully tax-deductible and directly fund the feeding, housing and veterinary services for these unique creatures.

The animals available for sponsorship through an online form are: Einstein the bunny, Shelley the turtle, Sydney the bearded dragon, Paz the white dove, Ethel the prairie dog, Hectora the iguana, Flinch the hedgehog, and Luna the owl. However, all are welcome to visit the Nature Center to meet and potentially sponsor any resident animal.

You can complete a sponsorship online. For further information, contact Administrative Affairs Manager Leah Salomoni at 203-655-7459.
