Something you can do for others during the long Thanksgiving weekend: Find some old coats you won’t use again and drop them off at Darien Ice Rink.
Here’s the coat drive announcement from the Junior League of Stamford-Norwalk:
Help us give warmth this winter by donating new or gently used coats at one of the following locations now through Nov. 30. (the Wednesday after Thanksgiving).
Children and adult coats of all sizes are needed and will be sorted and distributed to Open Door Shelter, Person-to-Person, and Malta House.
Coats may be donated at:
- Darien – Darien Ice Rink — 55 Old Kings Hwy. N.
- Downtown Stamford – Wolfe’s Cleaners, 288 Bedford St.
- Norwalk – Michael’s Cleaners, 558 Connecticut Ave.
While you’re looking for coats to donate, you might come across other clothing that isn’t usable by anyone, any more. If you have a dump sticker, Darien Recycling Center (that is, the dump) will take clothing and cloth, whether it can be worn or not.
Here’s what the recycling center recently posted on Facebook about textile recycling:
WHEN THE USAGAIN BINS near the Swap Shop and transfer station building fill up, the contents are removed to a truck like this one. Usable or unusable clothing, shoes, linens & accessories (backpacks, purses, hats, gloves, belts, etc.) can be recycled in these bins.
Recycling textiles provides two benefits to the town:
- a reduction in the amount (and cost) of solid waste hauled way;
- payment of $200/ton for textiles collected.
Recycling textiles also saves natural resources and is a source of affordable clothing for people world-wide.
