A Mansfield Avenue woman, 50, was charged with a misdemeanor by Darien police, who determined she knew or should have known that alcohol was being served at her daughter’s 18th birthday party. Police described the Tuesday, June 27 incident with this account, including accusations not proven in court:

Police went to 328 Mansfield Ave. at about 10:28 p.m., after receiving a message on the department’s anonymous tip line about a teen party with alcohol. When they went to the scene, they saw cars from several taxi services pulling up to the driveway. Police also saw five youths running away and two others, a male and a female, starting to walk away on Mansfield Avenue.

Darien police say that when they arrived at a teenager’s party where alcohol was consumed, partygoers told police that they had brought alcohol themselves and the host hadn’t provided it. The partygoers, all young women, even showed police text messages — but in one of the messages said the host’s mother was fine with having alcohol at the party, according to police. Police gave this additional information about the incident, including accusations not proven in court:

At about 8:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 25, an anonymous tip alerted police to a party at 17 Goodwives River Road. When police showed up there, they found alcohol and 13 females, ranging in age from 17 to 19. The host, Alexandra Barnard, who turned 19 that day, at first told police that she had supplied the alcohol, but then retracted that and said the partygoers had each brought their own booze.

Police who arrived Friday night at a home on Bishops Gate on a report of teenagers drinking at a party found that the caller was the one who hosted the event. Darien police gave this account of the incident:

The caller, a teenage girl who lives at the house, told police when they arrived at about 9:30 p.m. on Friday, June 16 that she invited “a few friends” over for a small party. When word got out that there was a party with no parents around, many other teenagers began showing up, until there were about 50 there, many of whom were drinking alcohol.

When she came to the conclusion that the party was getting out of hand, she called police. No charges were filed, and the police description of the incident, which was just released, doesn’t say if any teenagers were at the scene when they arrived, or what happened to them.

A 19-year-old Greenwood Avenue teenager last week hosted an outdoor party where alcohol was available, resulting in his arrest, Darien police said. Police described what happened with this account, including accusations not proven in court:

Police went to Greenwood Avenue at 11:47 p.m. after getting a report of a loud party. When they arrived, they saw several people running from the property. Red cups and beer cans were scattered around the area. The 19-year-old man who identified himself as the host said he had invited friends over for a bonfire.

A 16-year-old boy hosted a party with alcohol on Friday at his home on Mansfield Avenue, said police, who were told that about 20 to 25 teenagers showed up. Darien police described what happened with this account (including accusations not proven in court):

At 9:09 p.m., police received an anonymous tip about a party with underage drinking brought officers to 359 Mansfield Ave. When they got there, a 21-year-old man met with them and told them he’d just arrived at home, 15 to 20 minutes before, to find that his brother, 16, had invited friends over for the party. He told police that there were about 20 to 25 teenagers in the house; that he’d asked them to leave; and that he was trying to get the house cleaned up. The officers went in the house to check on the welfare of the teenagers but didn’t find any.

At this time of year, the Darien Police Department typically sees an increase in the number of calls for gatherings where minors are possessing and/or consuming alcohol. This increase can be attributed to prom season, the end of the school year, and the return of college students to town. The Darien Police Department is taking this opportunity to remind parents and homeowners about the criminal and civil consequences of allowing or permitting the possession/consumption of alcohol by minors at their homes. ______________

Various social-host and underage-possession charges can be brought against any parent or homeowner who either actively participates in allowing minors to possess or procure alcohol or even passively allows the possession or consumption to take place.

When police arrived at a Silver Lakes Drive home after a report of a loud party and saw teenagers running off toward woods in back, near New Haven Line railroad tracks, Metro-North was contacted and all train traffic was halted, police said. In a lucky break for Metro-North riders, the incident happened at 1:15 a.m., Saturday, when traffic was very light. Unluckily for the parents at the house on 17 Silver Lakes Drive, police charged them with permitting people under 21 years old to possess alcohol on their property. After someone complained to police of loud noise coming from the area of the house, officers arrived at the scene and saw several people talking loudly in front of the home and other people, believed to be teenagers, running from the place into nearby woods. Police also saw empty beer cans on the garage floor and tables set up to hold beer cans and other alcoholic beverage containers.

A father called to 911 when his 16-year-old daughter became semi-conscious after he picked her up from a house on Shady Acres Road, which led to police finding a teen drinking party, Darien police said. Police said they charged the 17-year-old host of the party with alcohol- and marijuana-related offenses. Police described what happened with this account, including accusations not proven in court:

At about midnight on Saturday, April 15, the father called 911 to get first responders to his Gardiner Street home, where he had just brought her daughter from a residence on Shady Acres Road.

The father told police that she had called him for a ride. Police said she appeared “incapacitated” and it was evident she was heavily intoxicated.

A party with numerous teenagers at 130 Mansfield Ave. on Saturday night, March 25 and into Sunday morning was stopped when an officer on patrol saw two teenagers in a dispute outside the house, police said. Darien police described the incident with this account (including accusations not proven in court):

At 12:39 a.m., the officer saw the two teenage men, both 18, in a dispute in the driveway. Numerous teenagers were at the house. Police later found that both men live at the house.

Darien Police said they stopped a party Monday night, Feb. 20 on Richmond Drive where under-age youths were drinking, and charges were brought against the 16-year-old host. Police described what happened with this account, including accusations not proven in court:

At 10:25 p.m., a tip through the Police Department’s anonymous tip line resulted in police visiting 23 Richmond Dr., where they saw many youths on the property (no number or estimate was given in the report). Almost all of the partygoers ran off when officers approached. Police saw a 30-pack of Keystone Light beer on the front lawn, and through a large front window saw many beer cans and red solo cups on a table.

When police are alerted to a teenage drinking party in Darien, most of what they do revolves around the safety of the under-age drinkers there and the safety of other people who might be on the road when intoxicated drivers from the party go home. That was one of the themes brought up by two Darien police officers involved with youths in town when the officers spoke recently at a meeting for parents at Darien High School. Detective Mark Cappelli, who works on cases involving youths in town, and Officer Bryan Wallman, who had just been named (two days before the meeting) as school resource officer for Darien High School, replacing James Palmieri, who had just been named a detective. Cappelli, who grew up in town and lives here with his wife and daughter, has been on the Darien police force for 21 years, and on the Youth Bureau for the past nine years. Wallman has been a police officer in town for the past decade and previously was school resource officer at Hindley School.
