Students at the Kids Care Clubs at Royle and Holmes elementary schools participated in activities to help others in the area. — This article combines announcements from Holmes School Kids Care Club and At Home In Darien. The Holmes School Kids Care Club continued its tradition of giving this month with a hat and mitten Drive for Inspirica, a homeless shelter in Stamford. This year’s new programs were described during At Home In Darien’s annual meeting, including a Half-Price Taxi Program for seniors, and the 70 attendees heard a talk on aging and aging programs.

Gina Blum, executive director, spoke to the crowd at the Dec. 6 meeting in Darien Library about the organization’s recent accomplishments. Blum was particularly proud of these 2018 milestones:

* A multi-year strategic plan to move the organization forward

* A new Half-Price Taxi Voucher Program for anytime on-demand transportation at a reasonable price

* Dementia Friend Champion Training Program completed by Blum and McGuire. The program is designed to make the community more age friendly. Upcoming programs will train Darien residents and others to become Dementia Friends.

At Home In Darien would like to thank the many volunteers who participated in this fall’s senior leaf raking program. Students in the St. Thomas More Youth Group of Darien, Church of Latter Day Saints Youth Darien Ward, Darien YMCA Adventure Guides and Princesses, the St. Luke’s of Darien’s Confirmands [those going through confirmation], Darien United Methodist Church and the Community Council from Darien High School all spent 400 hours raking, bagging and hauling numerous piles of leaves from the homes of 23 Darien seniors. Our heartfelt gratitude goes out to these groups and individuals for their kindness and service to the community.

Darien High School music students will perform a special Holiday Spectrum Concert in the High School auditorium at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2018. Darien senior citizens are invited to attend this concert free of charge and listen to the sounds of festive holiday music. Darien High School’s Theater 308 has kindly invited Darien seniors to attend the dress rehearsal of Our Town at Darien High School On Wednesday, Nov. 14. Seniors can enjoy the show free of charge without the crowds expected at performances over the weekend. Free transportation to and from the Darien High School is also available through At Home in Darien. (Reservations are required.)

In partnership with At Home In Darien, the 2018 Darien High Senior Football Captains have extended a special invitation to senior citizens to attend the DHS home games with free admission. The Darien Blue Wave Football team led by Captains Blake Cellar, Connor Fay, Bruce Ferguson and Willy Keating are excited to welcome senior fans to this season’s home games and look forward to seeing them cheer in the stands. Admission to home games will be free for Darien seniors aged 65+. Handicapped accessible parking spaces will also be available. At Home In Darien will provide transportation with its sedan and van service for those who need it.
